Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
I just tried it out. I get no spinny cube when it switches. What is wrong here?

Oh, another bitching...
On my friend's computer, when he sets his desktop images to changeevery 5 seconds, it goes all smoothly in transition. On y computer, it just instantly switches to the next picture. What is the problem there?

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
I remember seeing an application in a MacAddict issue with a link to an application that forces Quartz Extreme.. the issue in which MA gave an overview on the next-gen iPods. With something like, Top 100 Freeware Apps. Can someone give me that link?

I have the same computer (500MHz DV iMac). The forcing-Quartz Extreme thing won't work; if anything it'll slow your computer down drastically.
This may be what you were thinking of: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/16006
So yeah, we're stuck without the sweet eye-candy until we get new Macs.

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
Man, it's like someone's got to post a notice every week to keep the morons who don't have suitable hardware from spoiling the voting system. I'm trying to decide whether to get a Radeon 7000 and G4 cpu for my B&W G3 or save up for a Quicksilver, and I can't get a read because of all the idiots whining when PCI Extreme doesn't allow them to run QE on unsupported chipsets. If you do not have a PCI version of a "GeForce2 MX, GeForce3, GeForce4 MX, or GeForce4 Ti or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU" with Mac firmware, then this software will NOT work for you under ANY circumstances. It's only intent is to convince QE to treat the PCI interface as though it were AGP. You still need a supported GPU!
so DON'T DO IT!

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
Damn, it won't even work on this age-old thing. I have a Rage 128 Pro 2. God, I hate this. I'm getting an iBook.
Problem is, I'm 13. I can't get a job anywhere. Stupid labor laws. What if the child has a desire to labor, idiots? I want to labor at a computer store to get money to get an iBook.

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
I've got a 600mhz G3 iMac... Fast User Switching is amazing... no spinny cube thing, of course, but it's nearly instantaneous!
It's actually faster than opening a Finder window (and there is no lag time once its displayed either). (BTW, while no cube thing, I love seeing the menu bar slide into place the first time you start a user... too cool!)
Panther is an awesome upgrade!

do they have something like DeskShade Plus that hides the icons on the desktop? cause that will do what you're describing.

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
I'm 99% certain that fading between multiple desktops is a feature of Quartz Extreme. I've seen this happen on the new computers at the Apple retailer near me on their new computers; without Quartz Extreme the pictures won't cross-dissolve, they'll just "instantly switch".

Re: Panther's Fast User Switching effect=not real
I'm 10,000% sure that it requires Quartz Extreme.
I'm just glad that Apple didn't stick with its original plans of 32 MB VRAM, because that would have made my 6 month old $3,299 invesment useless. And yes, I bought it when it first came out, not before some update.
