I went to CompUSA today to see if they had the new ibooks. I went back to the Apple section, and a salesman asked what I was looking for. When I told him, he led me to the front of the store and turned me over to a woman, who in turn led me to a display of iPods.

Our conversation went like this:

Me: Oh. I was actually looking for an iBook.

Her: Well, these are the ones we have.

Me: Not an iPod. An iBook.

Her: It's the same thing.

Me: No it isn't.

Her: What is it you're looking for?

Me: An iBook.

Her: <blank stare>

Me: An iBook (by this time I'm just smurfing with her, realizing she's clueless)

Her: Well, this is what we have.

This goes on a for a few minutes until finally another CompUSA employee hears us and tells her that an iBook is a notebook computer.

Her: Oh, well those would be back in the Apple section.

Me: That's where I was

So I walk to the back of the store, where the original guy tells me that it will be another week before they have the 14" iBooks.

Yeah, you would think that it would be a requirement of the job to at least know the basics of the product line. If they're going to sell Apple products, there should be at least one person there who knows a lot about said products, and other salespeople should direct customers to the expert if they're interested in Apple. Otherwise it just makes the whole store seem unprofessional.

Every employee (covering all the people there) should know what each product is called, atleast, that's in the store (big place as it may be.. it's really not THAT much to know)! It's unfathomable to me that the store even bothered to hire someone who couldn't demonstrate knowledge of the products they were going to be selling.

The fact the guy took you to the lady in the first place sounds more like he just didn't want to deal with a customer sad

I used to sell computers and related items - Sadly, they were all PC's.. but I got over it and knew everything about them and all the items I sold, since that's what a sales person is supposed to do in the first place! The better part is.. I wasn't in a store that just sold computers.. I sold electronics, cd's, tapes, jewelry, clothes, ect.. I had the most basic of knowledge of everything (eventho I was only supposed to be there to sell the computers!) and indepth knowledge for around 60% of everything that the store sold.. so... In my eyes, there's no real excuse for someone working at a store as specialized (and small) as CompUSA, to NOT know!

imho.. if they didn't show the basic knowledge of the products.. then they shouldn't be there. If they won't tend the customers, then they shouldn't be there either because they aren't doing their job.

It might be her fault for just not caring... but it's possible that she didn't get enough training. I think it's the former - that she's just a dumbass.

Of course she's only paid, what $4.25/hr? It's hard to care on that little.

It seems like this stores will hire anybody who has sales expereince. Obviously this person has no experience in Apple products! Idiot!

No wonder my former graphic design instructor and former classmates said to never by an Apple at Comp USA.

Anyway, I was going to call jondaris an smurf for not just clarifying what it was he/she was looking for...but then I realized that this was the second person he'd talked to. So, not only do I forgive you playing games with her, I encourage it. If she's their "specialist" and can't tell you smurf, then she deserves the humiliation.

And that folks, is why so many people don't like to shop in places such as Comp USA. Oh, the store has it's uses. If you need some printer paper, CD-R's, or other such things in a hurry, they're fine. They also sell spools of Cat 5e cable, RJ45 plugs, and the crimp tool, if you need stuff like that.

Have some fun at Radio Shack. ("You've got questions? We've got blank Stares.")

Ask for a logic board battery for your mac. In all probability, you'll get the standard "We don't stock anything for Macs!". So, ask for stock number 23-026.

I was lucky when i got my comp at a curcuit city they had a sections for computers downstairs and they had a nice place displaying the apple computers. The 2 guys who were head of the Computer Department were both Mac guys which was cool and now that i've been to a few apple stores it was like a little apple store big_smile !!

Sure, if you want to pay 75% markup over standard price. But even Fry's has started to get "consumer" as of late. Went get a SCSI320 RAID card, and the Palo Alto store didn't carry them. So they called all the other area stores and NOBODY had a SCSI320 RAID card. They had non-raid 160 cards and SCSI2 cards for scanners and other non-drive objects. One salesman explained to me that ATA/SATA was the wave of the future for RAID and that they were quickly replacing SCSI which was old and slow. hmm roll
