Apple releases X11.app
And I'm really happy they did. Finally, X11 for Mac that works. I downloaded it yesterday ( http://www.apple.com/macosx/x11/ ) and today I have Gimp up and running. Stay tuned-- I'm going to try to get xmms working, too.
I've decided that the only way I'm going to install anything to X11 any more is via OSX packages. I've tried Fink, NetBSD, and compiling from source, and if you're like me, a life-long Mac GUI user who likes it when things are simple, easy, and effective, and do not involve typing arcane commands, I can strongly recommend using packages over any of those other ways. These are the two best places to get packages: (At least, these are the two best sites that I've found; if anyone has any other places to get packages, I'm all ears.)
OpenDarwin.org
This is the place for Gimp and gtk. They also have xchat, vim, rxvt, OpenMotif, and more.
Forked.net
This place isn't as up-to-date as darwinports, but they do have some useful stuff, especially xmms, the X Multi-Media System, which provides sound and movies. They've got lots of networking software, too.

Did you try the fink commander with fink, its a frontend gui for fink, much easier than command line, thats what I use for X pkgs, I have been running x from the console for a month or so now, and i love it, still a couple bugs to work out but i'll get it to where i want.

Yeah, I tried Fink, but it doesn't put its software where I want it. It puts everything into a sw folder, which is fine for Fink, but not for me.
