Sleep Issue with SETI@Home
Hello. I used to be able to leave SETI@Home on overnight (I have the command line version) and set the computer to go to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity. So, whenever a work unit would finish during the night, 30 minutes later the computer would sleep.
However, ever since I ran an update (I believe it was one of the 10.2.x updates, and not 10.2 itself), the computer would go to sleep 30 minutes after I left it, regardless of whether it was finished or not.
How can I fix this?
Also, I'm still skeptical about 10.2.8. I have a 350MHz slot-loading iMac. Should I install it? It says it adds functionality to Power Management. Perhaps that would fix my SETI@Home sleeping issue. I currently have 10.2.6 with 320MB of RAM.
Any thoughts?
Thank you for your co-operation.

Re: Sleep Issue with SETI@Home
Yes, at some point, the "is anything running" test (to use the technical term
) was changed to ignore either nice'd or background-only processes. Since I wanted my computer to continue crunching workunits, I didn't look further into the specifics, but just set the computer sleep preference to "never". I do set a separate display sleep, so I save some power when the computer's just crunching.
Is the reason sah stops after completing a unit because you don't have a persistent Internet connection or because you're telling it to stop? Well, either way, if you leave your computer on all night, it shouldn't use that much power after it's done crunching (just sitting idle with the screen blanked), so that would be my recommendation.
As for 10.2.8, I can't judge, but I doubt the PM changes would help with this. Given people's problems (including my own), I wouldn't install it.

Re: Sleep Issue with SETI@Home
I do set my Sleep Preference to "never", but I'd still like it to go to sleep.
I use the SetiDockling to control my SETI@Home. I just thought of something: I suppose it would not go to sleep if I leave the Terminal open and run SETI directly.
When I get home tomorrow I'll try that. It should probably work. I have no clue why I didn't think of this sooner.
Thanks for your input on 10.2.8. I probably won't install it.

Re: Sleep Issue with SETI@Home
Alright, I think I've worked around my problem here.
After setting the Sleep timer to 1 minute to test a solution, I let SETI run directly in the Terminal (as opposed to using SetiDockling) with the -verbose command (as in ./setiathome -verbose).
The display shut off after one minute, but the computer did not sleep.
It did not work, however, without the -verbose command.
So now it should not go to sleep after half an hour if it is not finished the work unit. Hopefully, it will go to sleep if it did finish it.
I just thought I'd let everyone know.

Re: Sleep Issue with SETI@Home
Ok, what the hell.
The computer went to sleep after half an hour, but when I set it to one minute to test this, only the display shut off.
I turned off display sleep when I tested this solution when I set it to 1 minute because I thought it was useless to have the display sleep with the 1 minute setting. When it's set to half an hour, however, I have the display set to sleep after 5 minutes.
Would that make any difference to the computer going to sleep or not?
The reason I want this to work is because when I'm not running SETI@Home, I want the computer to sleep after half an hour of inactivity, such as when it's at the login screen and someone forgets to put it to sleep. But I don't want to keep having to set the sleep timer to "never" just so it won't sleep in the middle of a work unit.
Stupid sleep settings...
