Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
For a while I was looking at getting a dual processor 1 ghz machine. However, with that and a LCD screen it would get kind of pricey. I have recently been thinking about getting an older G4 (@ 450 or 500 MHZ) and using the savings to get a nice screen. I will be developing websites, doing photoshop work, developing flash movies, and editing digital video. What do you all think about the set ups? i am in school, so I am trying not to spend too much money, but I want to get a nice machine that runs OSX well and has pretty good performance when I am developing.
Thanks for the replies! Mac haters, don't tell me to get a PC. I have had one for 8 years and 3 ghz means nothing to me because the OS are all a pain in the ass (even XP).

Try to go dual processor if you can.
Please.
Used DP would be fine. If I had a say in the matter, I wouldn't get a current Mac desktop just because I think they're in limbo.
I'm going to slap your ass so hard, your bell-bottoms will be ringing.

Yeah, Dual 1ghz are good. I would almost wait, unless you got a really nice deal or need it now.

What's coming should be so much better that I don't think buying now could possibly be a good idea.

I'd recommend one of the used Quicksilver G4s, the 700 or 867MHz ones. I'm still on my 867 and she absolutely flies.

USED! Dualie will be helpful. The reason I say used is because it's quieter, and unless you need 2 optical drives, I don't see any great need for a new machine with the halfass DDR.

It's best to use PM (private messages for buying and selling) -- a handy dandy feature of these new forums.
Anyway, make sure you don't get some of the earlier flat panel monitors, such as the Apple 15 inch or the 15 inch LCD iMac. I bet you can pick up some 19 inch used CRT.
Since you are in school, you can get a good deal on NEW single processor G4 Towers at Apple.com.

Re: Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
I have a G4/466 (digital audio model). For nearly everything I do it is plenty fast enough (or maybe I'm just slooow).
I do digital video and the only time I need to get up and leave for awhile is when compressing video for output to Quicktime or VCD using Toast. Well, also rendering transitions in iMove is a little slow too, but, not unbearable. I also fiddle around with photos using Photoshop Elements II. I'm not a professional, so don't use many features that require rendering. However, for usual tasks like contrast, fill, brightness, cropping, resizing, etc, my G4/466 takes only a few seconds or less. The machine is very solid running OS X and has plenty of room for expansion.
You can probably pick up a used G4/466, 533, etc for less then $1000, maybe a few hundred depending on what is in it. Then spend big $$$ on a 17" or 19" Apple LCD monitor. The LCD's are much easier on your eyes. I need "special focus" glasses to use CRT's but, not for LCD's.
Of course you should always buy the newest technology you can afford and make use of.
Anyway, that's my 2

Re: Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
all poor advice.
if you MUST buy a Mac, go to a couple (or call) Apple retail stores and ask for a "refreshed" PowerMac. The night Jaguar was release, before the "fake DDR" PowerMacs, I got one with 867mhz G4, 384MB SDRAM, 60GB HD, GeForce 2 MX, and Superdrive for $999. 50% the original price! I sold the GeForce 2 on eBay for $100 and bought a PC Radeon 8500 for $85 that was twice as fast and after a month of getting frustrated with how slow it was, I sold it for $1500 and built a 3ghz PC.
Macs are REALLY slow with Macromedia programs. Flash movies are choppy, dreamweaver is slow and buggy, and editing video is amazingly slow. I couldn't believe that it takes a minute to add a 2 second video transition when it's instant with Microsoft Moviemaker 2. What took me 15 minutes to render I can now do in three.
Stay away from eBay. There are morons out there who still think a 500mhz mac with a cd-rom are worth a thousand bucks. Buy a refurbished model from Apple and you will get the warranty, and you might even make a profit when you realize how slow a Mac really is.

Buy new. It's worth a few extra bucks to get a system that will last longer. You'll be enjoying great speed with the newest applications long after you forget about the money you could have saved by buying an older machine. Just wait until Apple releases the next iteration in a month or two.

I suppose I shouldnt bother pointing out that boxhead managed to buy a 3ghz Pentium like 3 months before they were announced.
Microsoft Moviemaker 2.
[stifles a giggle]
to run OS X, you gotta mount your computer on it.

Re: Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
The deciding factor to me between an older G4 and an iMac is what percentage of work do you do in Photoshop? If it's not a lot, then I would try the high end eMac or iMac widescreen.

Don't discount the expandability of the G4. Things are going to feel a little crowded in a few years with the limited hard drive space afforded in an eMac or iMac. I also don't really see how a G4 tower would perform better in Photoshop than an eMac or iMac G4 as opposed to any other software application.

That may have been true a few years ago, before OS X was released, but with the whole operating system capable of using Altivec, I wouldn't go with a G3. I have both a G4/350 and an iMac/600 and the G4 is significantly faster, although I'm certain RAM (832 vs. 256) plays a large role in this.
NO NO NO. Not the iMac G3, I meant the iMac G4. Sorry for the cornfusion.

One thing Box was right about was eBay. You can find some good prices there but most of things are overpriced
I laughed at the rest of his post
I think dual 500 or something like that would be a nice choice. It shouldnt be too expensive, its quite fast and you will probably want to replace it in a year or so when you will be able to get PPC970 for a good price.
Btw, what about iMac/eMac ? 17" iMac is a good computer with good screen.

Go laptop. It is after all, "The Year of the Notebooks." Just kidding. Anyway, you should check out what that dude is asking for his almost new eMac. Sounds like an interesting prospect.

Re: Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
thanks for the advice you all. i looked at the education discounts but they sucked compared to the student developer store prices, which is where i was looking to purchase the Mac new. If I get a dual 867 from the apple store, will I have to pay sales tax? also, how loud are the dual 867s? I have heard that the older ones sound like a leafblower, how about the latest ones? i think i will wait until the end of the month and see if the prices drop/speed gets bumped. i do want to get an LCD over the CRT for 2 reasons, desk space/look and I like how the LCD looks ( I love my Ibook display.) I have thought about getting the widescreen Imac for $1500, but I am not sure it will offer the same performance that I will need. Box of heads, until you start talking about Avid, Final Cut, and Premeir then I can't take your video editing advice very seriously. Soderbergh's latest movie was edited on Macs. They can't be that bad

Re: Gonna buy a Mac desktop, thinking new or used
To bad you're stuck on the idea of an LCD. For the price of one 17" LCD you could buy 2 sweet 19" LaCie monitors and have change left over.
Last time I checked 19" Lacie's were running about $250 and you can't buy an LCD at any price that can match a LaCie for image quality.
LCDs are for people who dont care much about display quality and have money burning a hole in their pockets.
"and it's not surprising that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."
