Disable Picture saving

So my brother has a website of his artwork.  Obviously, he doesn't want the work copied, so I put a javascript that disables right clicks.  works great on macs and pc's.  but you can still drag the images off the screen, or worse yet, on a pc, by default, you get the save email print option that shows up on mouseovers of pictures.
is there a way to disable either of these two features from the website?

Re: Disable Picture saving

I would be willing to guess that the only surefire solution is to put a nice watermark on each image.

Re: Disable Picture saving

If he is so dead set on keeping his work from being copied the only good way is just to post small low rez examples.
The "No Right Click" script is not only ineffective but also extremely annoying for people like me that navigate using the right click menu. Add to that that all it takes is for someone to turn off scripting to completely work around your script. Also I would like to see this site that has a script like this that works on Macs, I see that right click disabled on PCs alot but I know of several sites that use this method and it dosent work against my Mac.
Honestly people that are that worried about their art being copied dont have any bussiness having a website. If someone wants your images they will get them unless you do something wretched like put the images in a Flash slide show and even if you do that their is allways screen shots.

Re: Disable Picture saving

I have to agree with jdsmith575. A watermark in each image will allow people to see what the image is but will render it useless for there purposes.

If you don't like that option and want to avoid javascript you could use css for a similar effect.
place the image as a div background, set the hover to display a message about not copying the art or hoe to order the art.

good luck

Re: Disable Picture saving

zalgren, i like the hover message idea.  Now I'll just have to look up how to do that and not make it too annoying.  i could see how something like that would get old fast...  good idea.
i have a watermark on a lot of the pictures, but since the watermark says what the product is, it's not REALLy affective (American Greezer)

as for the script, it works in safari, and netscape and ie on windows.  it doesn't work in omniweb or camino.
it doesn't affect the flow at all, because the art is in a popup window with a close button.
i know it's not really affective, since it obviously has work arounds (take a screen shot, and ALL the work is null), but i figure this would eliminate the obvious solutions.

Re: Disable Picture saving

Why not display it as a background image using CSS?

This way the image does show up and when its clicked on, nothing happens.

Unless a person really knows how to dig through CSS (or knows to look in a CSS file for the image source), it might be a simple way of detract people from outright stealing it.

(Of course, someone could always use a screen capture tool to get the image.)

Hope it helps...

Re: Disable Picture saving

If it can been seen, it can be copied. No amount of JavaScript will help you. Someone can always hit "ctrl-shift-4" or "print screen".

Exactly.  If someone wants, they can get it.  No sense in bogging things down with scripts and such.

A small tag in the bottom of the image is what I use if it is large.  I also give images very specific names so I can search for them later if I want.  (often people don't bother to change names.)

I am obviously very big on artist's rights.  But I don't really see what the big deal is preventing people from downloading images.  I do it all the time for artists I admire.  I keep a local collection of works for reference. (mostly because sites on the web are not as static as they once were.)  As long as no one publicly uses or claims the image is their own, I doesn't bug me.  In fact is an honor if someone likes what I have done enough to put it on their desktop.

And as to the CSS background thing, it really isn't anymore secure.  In Moz if you right/ctrl+click on something with a background, you have the option of "View Background Image".  Which you can then save.
