SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

Hello, All--

Long-time reader of the mag, as well as a long-time user of SETI, first-time poster in this SETI forum...

Does Panther not like SETI? I upgraded my iBook 466 SE to Panther (from Jaguar 10.2.8) and the SETI screensaver won't launch. The program runs just fine but I only use SETI as a screensaver when I'm not at my iBook. I even upgraded to SETI 3.08 but it still won't launch (in the hot corner or in the time-out way)...  whaa

Thanks in advance for any help this might receive.

Re: SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

I can only add that I am having the same problem. Seti, even after reinstall won't launch on its' own. However.

I have noticed on certain reboots that it WILL. I haven't figured out why yet, but I'm working on it.

I've also noticed a new problem, that my iBook will no longer go to sleep when it is on battery power. The system preferences have it sleeping after 15 minutes of inactivity. The monitor shuts off, the hard drive spins down, but the computer still runs. I can't figure out why. I think it may have something to do with seti-like daemons running in the background, preventing it from sleeping.

You have an absolutely breath-taking... heiney. I mean, that thing's good. I wanna be friends with it.

Re: SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

Thanks for replying-- it's nice to know that I'm not alone in my trouble. I tried putting my iBook to sleep with the lid-- it worked fine, even on battery power. I'm guessing that your problem comes when the 15 minute time limit expires and it goes to sleep automatically? I don't do this (I have it disabled) so I didn't know it was an issue. I hope there's a way to solve both our problems... smile

Re: SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

I'm having the same SETI screensaver problem with Panther. I'm running 2 machines:
#1: 1GHz 12" Powerbook, 768RAM and 10.3.1
#2: 867Mhz tower, 768RAM and 10.2.8

The tower runs SETi screensaver no problem but can't get the PB to run SETI except as a launched app. Also the PB is running units slower (which it clearly shouldn't) than the tower...about 12hr (or more) on the PB vs. about 9 hours on the tower.

shrug

No solutions yet

Cheers

Re: SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

There's some threads at the SETI site about the same problem and
System Optimizer X 4.0.6 was suggested as an option. SETI screensaver is now working fine after running the optimizer and a restart. Looks a bit quicker but time will tell.

Cheers

Re: SETI Screensaver + Panther...?

System Optimizer was run and lots of stuff was optimized. smile SETI, however, still doesn't work. I'll cruise over to the SETI forums and see if I can find some answers there... Thanks again for all the feedback!

***EDIT***

OK-- I went back to the SETI forum for help and saw that people ran OnyX on their Panthers and SETI launched OK after a restart. I did all that but it still didn't work. Just for the hell of it I logged myself out (I'm the sole user on my iBook) and then back in. SETI launched as the screensaver! I guess that did the trick...? I won't know for sure until I test it some more, but maybe that'll do it.

Hope the works for other people, too... smile

***EDIT (Again)***

OK-- I found out that SETI won't launch as a screensaver unless I first log out and log back in. Even after a restart, it won't go until I log out (even though I'm the only user on the computer). Weird...
