pc windows/mac os X - connect with crossover ethenet cable?
HI - I checked, but couldn't find just what I was looking for - my girlfriend has done some work on her office's pc portable - she wants/needs to save it here, on my mac running os x Jag (iBook600) - I've got a crossover ethernet cable here - I think the pc's got 2000 (I actually almost never use pcs and am not overly familiar with them)
what's the best way of going about doing this?
Any help would be very appreciated
Ian

On the PC you can go network neigborhood right click go to propeties and see what she currently has for a network configuration. Once in properties scroll through list till you see one that says TCP/IP and her NIC card together, click on it and properties and you should find the current ip and mask. (Or in W2K use command prompt and type ipconfig used to be winipcfg if you ever used it before) Then make your ibook have an ip where the last set of three numbers is one different(w2k 192.168.0.1 and iBook 192.168.0.2). Then I think you should create a new folder on the W2K machine, right click, and tell it to share to everyone. Then on the iBook tell it to connect to server and locate the shared folder. You may or may not need to create the shared folder so try it without first.

They way I told you is kind of a long way, but in that she uses the computer at work I figured you didn't want to change her network configuration.

I think that's some sort of file structure error. What is all the correct info you are putting in?

Re: pc windows/mac os X - connect with crossover ethenet cable?
Hi, thanks for all the good help. I tried valiantly, but couldn't swing it - turns out she doesnt have administrator priveleges on the thing and it wouldn't let me do hardly anything - I couldn't even just burn a disk because I couldnt install the drivers for the outboard burner I have - in the the end pathetic arduous solution - I have an old superdisk device lying around which it actually recognised (but wouldnt eject) so I copied (slooooooooooooooowly) all her files using superdisks - hideously slow for some reason, maybe 25 minutes to fill one 120 mega disk, then the dump it in a mac another 15 minutes (I think it might have had to do with formatting the thing in FAT so the pc could handle it) - In future she's going to see if they can give her a different set up on the thing, or at least install a generalised disk burning software
Thanks all

Then on the iBook tell it to connect to server and locate the shared folder.
