Re: News channel 8 in Austin reports iTunes WIN not available
As far as the iTunes story goes, it makes you wonder how much other "news" they get wrong. Of course this article could be one of those that was made a few months ago, but they have put on the back shelf until there was an open time slot on a not-so-busy news day. Even so, they should check their facts before presenting it as "news"
As far as the poll question...
I was at the DMV yesterday renewing my license. I was in the line to get my picture taken. As I was talking to the DMV guy, this lady walks up next to me and askes the guy if this was window 22. The guy was kind of puzzeled and said yes. She said that she was here to take her driving test. He asked what her number was. (they have a "now serving number __" system) She said she didn't have one. The guy told her, kind of sarcastically, "you need to go to the window that says 'Start Here'" As she walked off he mumbled to me "Start here usually means start here." I shot back at him, "Unless you use a Windows PC, then 'start here' means shutdown" I don't know if he caught the full brunt of what I was saying but he chuckled.

In truth, it does. It also can mean other things, but you do go to "Start" to shutdown.

Sorry, it does not mean Shut Down. For one thing it is not 'Start Here', it is 'Start'. You go to the 'Start' menu to start the 'Shut Down', or 'Log Off' process, or to start other processes on the machine. I am no fan of M$ and Windows, but twisting inane arguments, to reach an end, is just lame, and makes me want to club baby seals. You need a better grasp on what "truth" is.

isn't there a thing that pops up next to the start menu right after you do a fresh install of windows that says "Start Here" or something like that, it might be the tool tip for the start menu too

My tool tip in XP does say 'Click here to begin', that is still not referring to shutting down, special since most of the PCs at my work have the 'Shut Down' option disabled... You can begin to log off or begin to shut down.
Windows suxors but not because, or just because they named the application menu 'Start'.

And a good football team only counts for the small percentage of people that actually can sit through a game of american football without falling asleep.

Thats right. Stereotype me. Just because I happen to enjoy watching a particular sport and have a local team that is good enough to be proud of I deserve your criticism? Typical Canadian....

mjsmitho,
If you have to go to the start menu in order to stop, there is something inherently funny about that. If you can't see that, then.... oh well.

I'm with mjsmitho on this one for the most part. Plus, there are plenty of things actually wrong with Windows that you can bash, so why persist with this stupid little aspect of it? Besides, where else would they put the Shutdown option? Or, if you say it's best where it is, then what would you name the Start button? If they went and got rid of a name for it at all, and just put the Windows logo on it, which would seem to appease everyone, then people here would complain about how Windows is ripping off Apple again. "Look Windoze has changed their Start button from "Start" to their fugly logo. That's so typical of Gates and co. Now it's just like the Apple menu... blah blah blah."

Austin is also home to two of the best Mac companies out there:
ASPYR
WESTLAKE
And MacPlay is just up the road in the big D, so like Texas or not, Mac gamers better well like it.
Being in Minnesota, we're all partial to local heroes MacSoft.

Dude I get the lame joke, but the "Definition" of the 'Start' menu is not truthfully 'Shut Down'... No more than the Apple menu means Shutdown, which would definitely not be funny.
Any who, you win, Windows suxors just because they called the Application menu Start instead of Shut Down.

Well the article has not changed, except some crappie iTunes image I hadn't seen previously. I guess this tech reporter is clueless on how to take a screen shot, or screen capture from their video.

Re: News channel 8 in Austin reports iTunes WIN not available
I had emailed them poiting out the fact error and the news director wrote me back:
Thanks for writing. You are one of hundreds of viewers who thankfully took
the time to point out Michael Garfield's error in this story. In fairness,
Michael produces his stories at our sister station in Houston, which then
sends them to us for air in Austin. The Downloadable music story was
produced way back in early September and because of a glitch in our system
was not aired until last week. Michael's story was substantially correct in
September, but obviously completely wrong after October 16th.
In a tech friendly city like Austin, that was a mistake we should
have caught and we are deeply embarrassed by it. Apple I-tunes is certainly
available for PC now.
Due to this mistake, we have instituted new procedures to make
doubly sure timely stories are aired on a timely basis, and stories in which
facts have changed will not be aired at all.
I appreciate your note and ask your forgiveness. Michael knows what
he's talking about even if we at News 8 are not perfect. We have updated the
web story and did indeed run a correction all weekend.
Thanks for watching News 8 Austin.
