Todays Ironic Moment.....

The last couple of monthes or so AOL has been running a really strong media campainge trying to make themselves seem less sucktacular than they really are.
One major point of this ad campainge is AOL 9.0's pop up blocking ability. Aol knows people hate pop-ups and thats an atractive selling point of course.

Now here is the irony:
I just got done setting up a system for a technically challenged aquaintance and I needed to go download AIM from AOL.com for her. So I hit AOL.com and am immedietly assaulted by no less than 8 pop ups!!! The real rapid fire ones that pile up all over so the target you were heading towards is completely obscured. And it gets better............AOL.com redirects me to AIM.com where I am again assualted by pop ups.

Yeppers thats good old AOL. Head firmly stuffed up their colective ass.

Nope, Netscape 7 on OS 9.

Clear your cookies, then.

Well...considering I was working with a freshly installed system I doubt its a cookies issue.

Re: Todays Ironic Moment.....

I thought I read that AOL will block 3rd party pop-ups, but anyone affiliated with AOL can use them. So AOL only allow pop-ups that benefit them. I could be wrong.

Pop-up ads are great, and free!

I have to pay $40 a month for cable tv ads!

Re: Todays Ironic Moment.....

Pop-under ads. what the hell is the point of a pop-under ad? A pop-up containing an ad they don't want you to see? I mean wha...?

And surely anyone with an IQ bigger than their shoe-size knows that pop-up/under ads piss everybody off and are utterly counter-productive, like spam. If someone uses a pop-up to advertise their company, it just makes me more determined not to ever use them for anything. Ever.

Is everybody stupid except me? And you lot? mad

BHR

That reminds me of a guys siye I was asked to look at last year. I went to his site and got a little pop=up dead center on the screen which, naturaly I closed immedietly with out even glancing at its contents, just like I am sure almost eveyone does. So I look at this sort of decorative index page on this site and try to find a "enter" link, I reloaded it several times figuring maybe it was a flash button or something not loading. Of course with each reload that little pop-up came back and was dismissed each time. Finally I gave up and wrote the guy saying I couldent figure out how to get in his site. Get this...........The "enter" link was in that pop-up!!!

I let him know that might not be the best way to do things. big_smile

Re: Todays Ironic Moment.....

Pop-up blocking is the main reason I started using Safari over IE.  That and IE's rendering issues.  Granted Safari is by no means perfect in terms of bugs and stability, but it is far more usable than IE.  I'd trade-off a crash every week or so for tabbed browsing and no pop-ups any day.

Pop-under ads, are used under the perception, that the user will not be pissed of by the ad until they are finished using your site, or close the window. The end result being the user doesn't necessarily know which site gave them the pop-under, and the site still can track the hit count for the ad.

I have not had sites not work so far in Safari in Panther.  I used to but, then I tracked it down to a QuickTime issue.  Reseting QuickTime to default fix all my problems..

shrug

Re: Todays Ironic Moment.....

Pop under ads use the idea that (atleast on windows machines) when you close browser windows it remains in the background. Waiting to get your attention. On the mac you actually have to tell the program to quit whereas on the pc you only have to click the x button.

As far as Safari is concerned it is IMHO the best browser I have used in my life. Integrated pop up blocking, bug tracking, and tabbed browsing. I want more of that! Nestcape (or mozilla, cant remeber which (for os 9)) offers huch of the same features but in an interface that can only be described as inspired by satan. Or bill gates.
