Once it gets between 200-500 and above (depending on the speed of your machine) it will get so slow you wont be able to stand it....

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
I've got 689 photos at 1 - 2mb each. It doesn't load slow for me. One bounce and about 3 seconds to full start. Of course this is with a 1.6 G5. But I don't know what it is or remeber with my G4's or G3's. But even with them it didn't seem slow.
Just from my experience. Not saying it isn't for others. But I've never had a problem with it loading quickly.
Could it be keeping permissions in place and hard drive defragged continiously? I am anal about keeping my system checked and clean. Though I know I don't have to, especially with OS X.
Just a remnant of my Windows days.
One of my many quirks.

iPhoto is a simple App for beginner users. Once you get into the seeming "professional" range, it starts to drag. If you have that many photos, maybe it is time to move up to a "real" program. I hear good things about the Adobe photo thing.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
I am using iPhoto Library Manager from versiontracker to manage multiple libraries and it works great. I have 2 large libraries and several small ones. The big ones contain 6,500 photos and 14,000 photos, each. These are mostly 400-500kb photos each. Sure, both of them take 30 seconds or so to load, but after that, iPhoto is just as zippy as always, with very few problems.
Of course, I am running 1.5 GB ram on a dually, and that certainly helps.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
Yeah, I don't use it much but when I do, it loads my 10,000+ images real slow. Like I can go shower and come back it it should be done... that's on a G3 600 mHz.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
The best tip is to just get a new computer. I've been using a Powerbook G4 667 and it gets pretty slow. My mom has a new 1Ghz iMac and I can't believe how much faster it is.
Also, turn off the drop shadows if you haven't already. That might help a little.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
I have about 1200 photos of 1MB each and I also find it a bit slow. It takes about half a minute to load but it's ok after that. I also have a rather old g4/400 so maybe it's time for an upgrade.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
theres on option in Preferences to turn off Frames (or borders, or something like that).
That speeds things up a lot when you have tons of pictures....

Thanks for the tip. I'll open iPhoto now, go make a sandwich, and then turn that off.

Re: iPhoto.........SLOWWWWWW!!!
iPhoto is a horrible app. I haven't used it in a long time. The directory it creates is a nightmare and reminds me of Windows. The alias thing has always bugged me too. I just created my own, very organized library of photos. I'm a photographer, so I have thousands of large images on my hard drive. My folder system is a piece of cake to back up onto CD.
Uploading : Image Capture
Editing : Photoshop
Viewing : Graphic Converter, sometimes Preview.

You are a very aggressive person Chewie.
I'm using iPhoto Buddy and I find it to be a good method about controlling my iPhoto library.
