what about this player instead of ipod?
http://www.tomshardware.com/mobile/20031122/index.html
It might not be as cool as an ipod, but the replaceable battery is a big plus imo.

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
No offence or anything...but...
YUCK!
I'm telllin ya, the iPod is so much better than that that its worth the extra money to get a new one. If you absolutely cant afford a new 3rd gen iPod, get a refirbished 1st or 2nd gen. The prices can be lower than the creative player on some refirb iPods, and the iPod is SOOOOOOOO much better. SO what do you want. Easily replaceable battery and frustrating interface OR not so easily replaced but pretty good battery and THE BEST FREAKIN PLAYER ON THE MARKET..
Ur choice

I cant tell you much because I don't have an iPod but from the looks of things I would go with the iPod. I've tryed it a few times and it has to be the easyest player to navigate.

What about this car instead of an Infiniti? I mean, they kind of look alike and they're both luxury sedans...

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
"An iPod for the financially challenged?"
At $262.00 as the cheapest Zen (all the other prices hovered around $299) I don't see the big savings? And all I see in the pictures is a Play button and a Back button. I don't see the big deal. Why not go for the extra $30 and get the iPod? There was no description of hard drive size, so is it comparable to a higher priced iPod?
And sexy? Only if you consider the librarian at the Providence Public Library sexy during business hours. The iPod is the same librarian, but out on the town on Saturday night at Club Hell.

Nail on the head.
I find it pretty funny...I hang out on forums with a lot of PC users sometimes, and everyone praises the iPod. I come here, and some people are dissing it (not just in this thread). Heh..

That's a nice car, it's all gold and shiny so it must be a good one. Yours?

Our conclusion is that the Creative Labs Zen NX is the best-designed portable player around. Its perfectly acceptable size, gigantic storage capacity, good looks, good ergonomics and, above all, outstanding quality playback make this the best device of its kind on the market.

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
It's not a bad looking device. I really like the option for the battery.
Only an 8mb buffer kind of sucks. And of course, USB 2.0 isn't very good compared to firewire. Having your data and power on the same line is a great feature. I would think having the buttons on the side, might make for accidently pressing them kind of a pain.

That's a bold statement.

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
well, the only thing the creative has over the ipod is the user can replace the battery, the rest of the advantages go to the ipod, mp3 and aac are better formats for portable devices, than wma.

I can see where this device would be attractive to some. I don't see any benefits from a functionality standpoint. The easy battery replacement is nice.

You can replace, or have Apple replace, the iPod battery too. Big deal, it's not like you're going to do it every month.

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
Oh yeah, I love this line:
" i-Pod has style and that means it gets flashed around even though it costs more and does less. "
First off, what kind of moron spells it "i-Pod"??? Sheesh. Then they go on and say the iPod does LESS? Um, hi, look at my iPod display my entire address book, calendars and notes. Watch me play three games as I sit on the bus. Watch me upload playlists that dynamically change depending on any of a dozen criteria. Oh look, now I'm uploading pictures from my digital camera. Plug in this mic, and I have a voice recorder. Look at me! I'm booting my computer from my MP3 player!!!!
Perhaps if the Zen had an FM tuner, or built-in voice recording, they could get away with saying the Zen can do a few things the iPod doesn't.
Sorry, the iPod is still better, even if it's a whopping $30 more. There's no excuse for columnists who don't do their research and present an unbiased article.

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
That thing is the worst of the portable hard drive players. I hate the controls, and their locations. The LCD is crap. Me and my GF have three iPods, 10gig, 20gig, & a 30gig, I have not had a need to replace a battery. I am sure it happens but how often, maybe once in its life?

Apple now has a battery replacement service. It's kind of expensive, but it exists. Also, the new iPod AppleCare covers battery replacement.

What is this i-pod they talk of? Is it some kind of cheap knock off of the iPod?

Damn, that's harsh!
The hard drive in my iPod crapped out on me, but I'll replace that before I buy another player.
I really like the add-ons and modifications, which give it many diferent functions and, after the hard drive died, the diagnostic mode (previous, next, action at reset) that told me what was wrong with it.
I have yet to see another player with such dexterity.
Name another player that can tell you what's wrong with it?

Re: what about this player instead of ipod?
I've heard a lot of talk about these "i-pods", what exactly is this strange device?
Anyway, my boss at work just plunked down some serious coin to get both his sons a 20 gig iPod. The day before he placed the order he was talking about the new Dell DJ and I just looked at him and said, "You know where I fall on. Get them iPods. Besides it's not just a music player."
To that he mentioned the calendar/notes functions (to his credit, he did his homework). Then I said, "No. Remember when walkmans came out and how cool it was to have one? It's like that all over again. You can get them something with a longer battery life, bigger hard drive, etc, but at the end of the day the software & interface is important, the form factor, and the fact that it's the number one MP3 player. Apple may be all about the hype, but hype doesn't sell crappy products (which the iPod clearly is not)."
Anyway, that's my story that I just thought I'd share. If it's not an iPod, it's an also ran.

iPod replacement batteriescan be purchased. Instructions are given on the site, and a suitable tool is included. The process doesn't look all that hard to do.

I have no regrets getting my iPod over any other type of mp3 player. The only thing I would like would be an easier to replace battery on the iPod other than that it is very Schweeet!!!!
