Network problems please help me
I would like to setup acess to my public folders on my system. That is easy... when I don't have my D Link router/firewall plugged in. I have tried for hours to try and get this thing to work correctly with no luck. Now I must turn to you fellow mac addicts to help me out.
I'm not really sure what needs to be done with configuring my router to point incoming traffic to my G4 and not my Pee Cs. I go to setup and configure the virtual sever with no luck. I am not good at this at all. Can anyone help me out?

I don't have all the answers, but after going here it looks like you need to assign a static on your G4 and then open the ports as described in the tech note. .
What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

You should be able to connect to your router as if it were a computer. I do not know the default IP number for Dlink, but for LinkSys its 192.168.1.1. When you type this into your browser, you will be presented with a web page interface that configures your settings.
From these web pages/configurations, you should be able to tell the router what IP to portforward to, and even what IP to put on the DMZ.
This is were problems sometimes come from, as the easiest way and often defualt way to use a router is with DHCP, which is inheritly bad for having a server.
This is were problems come in. DHCP can assign a different IP address for a computer when an IP is requested, such as waking from sleep, restarting, ect, based on how many computers are currently on the network. Portforwarding and DMZ both use a static IP address. So the problem is that all incoming requests will be directed the the IP number you designated in the configuration, but the actual IP address of your server is dynamic, changing when restarting.
I suggest to solutions:
1) Don't use DHCP to assign IP addresses, instead use manual assignments. This gets rid of changing IP's, instead using static IP's.
2) Don't let your server restart, shut down or go to sleep.
