Re: I hate Star Trek
As a baby boomer who grew up on the original, It amazes me that Star Trek is singled out as being stupid when I see how successfull all these "reality" shows and other such rot have become. Perhaps some of use enjoyed the best the medium had to offer at the time while appreciating the message behind the glitz.......it is totally a pleasure to watch an episode that no one else seems to get......but, that's just me.
Nail on the head.
And God said "taketh your rifles, all of ye, all but those unto the nation of California, for exempt must their rifles be and the resth are forlorn." So sayth the Lord.

Star Trek is nice but they need to give it a rest for a few years. At least they don't have two series going at the same time anymore.

Re: I hate Star Trek
As much as I hate to admit it, Star Trek is just not the future of Sci-Fi entertainment.
We live in a post-Matrix world now. It's all whiz-bang special effects and people fighting in slo-mo.
Star Trek was drama in a sci-fi setting.
I find it interesting that the "best" Star Trek movies were "Wrath of Khan" and "First Contact." Both movies are pure popcorn chompers with clearly defined good guys and bad guys and tons of eye candy.
Nobody want to see anyone act anymore.
Grandfatherly advice: You can drink 'em pretty, but you can't drink 'em smart.

I hope not. From what I saw, that show was only about cramming as much sex as possible into a 45 minute slot.

Which episode(s) did you see? The ads would give you that impression but it isn't like that. It is Fox so of course they are going to try to emphasize the sex.

I both know and hope you're wrong.
While Wrath of Khan and First Contact had a lot of action, they also had their fair share of charactor development and plot. You don't think they had good acting? The reason they work where other Treks don't is because they have an interesting story and action at the same time.
Movies like Insurrection won't work because it's basically a TV episode built into a movie. Not a very good episode at that, either. I couldn't care less about the acting in the movie if it's boring.
I'd conclude that the best of the best combine all the best features togethor. Nemesis was a popcorn flick that didn't do too well. Why? Because the story was stupid. You're wrong in saying that the ones that work are "pure popcorn chompers with clearly defined good guys and bad guys and tons of eye candy" because they also had stories that mattered.

I couldn't tell you the episode... All I remember was some butch woman running around trying to seduce people, and then ultimately making out with a girl...

I think if every episode of Firefly features girl-on-girl action, my point has been made crystalline.

Ah, that was the episode with the most sex (only attempted girl on girl). And the girl she was going to make out with knew the woman was really evil and she was just delivering the ship to other evil people. It was one of those evil woman attempts to seduce everyone long enough to kill everyone episode. Yeah, kind of corny but better than reality tv.

Wait...so your point must be that the show should never have been cancelled because girl on girl is cool.

Re: I hate Star Trek
Star Trek (Esp Next Gen. and on) is retarded nonsense enjoyed only by idiots.
There. I've said it.
Funny, FINALLY MENTIONED IS THAT: All the spinoffs 'cept for Next Gen are entirely based on presenting Male Eye Candy to it's best advantage.
In other words, you don't "watch" if you're a guy, you LOOK, OGLE and work on vid-capturing 7of9 and (what's the Jolene Blaylock Vulcan fem character in Enterprise?). Plot? Who cares unless "Plot" is the name of the next BABE on deck for Star Fleet.
Sticking with that appeal gaurantees longevity, like the endless life of the Rockettes is dependent on those high kicks. Star Trekettes forever!!
Other than that, the best things about Enterprise are the opening song & graphics and the "prequel" premise.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when are you going to have time to do it over?

Re: I hate Star Trek
There's a lot of smart people who were inspired by StarTrek and some of those folks were involved in getting us to the moon.
What?
Getting us to the moon was almost entirely a Political decision and inspiration (Kennedy proclaimed we'd get there long before Star Trek ever aired).
The designs, technology and logistics for the Apollo missions were set for use by '67 as well (they didn't just throw #11 up after seeing Kirk fight the Gorn.)

Re: I hate Star Trek
Mmmm.. DS9 became the best trek after the war broke out... Part of season 4, Seasons 5, 6 and 7, the show actually became fun to watch and characters got a lot more real. Best DS9 episode(s): In The Pale Moonlight, and Far Beyond the Stars.
I think I enjoyed B5 overall a lot more than any of the trek series. The fact that there was a consistant plot planned out in the beginning alone was amazing. if you don't like the Visual FX in B5, consider this: By the 4th and 5th season the show had only enough money to spend about $120,000-170,000 per episode. They did an amazing job with the money they had.
Best Sci-fi show on TV now? No question. Stargate SG-1...
