Re: burned dvds don't work in my mac
might it be the differances between +R and -R? or are they just dirty?
You know the hole, the one you put the pie in?

this page explains the difference
http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3
this one section covers that, the page is also huge (over 1/2 MB of html) so it takes a while to load

If they are +R I think you are out of luck.

What DVD drive are you using to read it? Internal Superdrive? External something?

Re: burned dvds don't work in my mac
Had yesterday same kind of problem like you maru!!
"when i press play in dvd player it says "Not permitted." when i try to open the video_ts file it brings up the error "could not detect a valid medi file [-70001]"
The funny part was that the disk was burned with the same superdrive just before mounting!! This disk however played nicely with my stand-alone DVD-player. All other DVD+R disks have worked with my iMac also so this must be fault of this one disk.
done with:
17" FP iMac with Sony +/- superdrive and Verbatim DVD+R

My first Mac:
17" 1,25GHz G4 iMac, 512MB, 160GB + Lacie 250GB, Superdrive, Bluetooth, MacOS 10.3.5

Um... maybe because the Superdrive is "-R" ?
A Mac Genuis told me this when I went to purchase DVDRs and I just checked to be sure.

Some superdrives are made by Pioneer and those are DVD-R only! I have a new 17" flatpanel iMac which has Sony made superdrive and that can read/write all DVD+/-R(W) formats.

Yes, and Apple disabled the "+" readability and burning abilities of these drives.

For those of us not up to speed... +/-
There's really not much more to it. Two different types of disks: DVD-R and DVD+R. Some players only work with -, some only work with +, and some work with both. Apple's are - only.

Never heard that before.

This is interesting....
I did some testing with my iMac and DVD+/-Rs. I have burned successfully DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD-RW discs with Toast 6 Titanium. I haven't tested DVD+RW. I use MacOS 10.3.1.
DVD-R and -RW discs are playable in apple DVD player but my DVD+Rs are not. They give the error noted before. However VLC can play these DVD+Rs nicely in my 17" FP iMac (Superdrive = Sony DW-U10A).
edit: Tried one disc more... Same kind of Verbatim DVD+R than those that didn't work. BOOM! Apple DVD player started and showed disc menu... This disc was made with PC, DVD Shrink and HP DVD+R/RW drive. Those that didn't work were made with DVD Backup, DVD2OneX, Toast 6 Titanium and my own Mac... What could I be doing wrong??

Re: burned dvds don't work in my mac
I was just checking xlr8yourmac.com and you're definitely correct. People are burning and reading +Rs with the Sony. Pretty spiffy. So why doesn't yours work? What speed are you burning? If 4x, try burning at 1X or 2X.

Thats the first thing I thought I should do. Those discs are compatible with 4xspeed but I have to try to burn 2x instead...

Can't they all just agree on an industry standard already? I'm getting nauseous reading this.

Re: burned dvds don't work in my mac
Not that I endorse this but....
In the past I was known to rip DVDs and then reauthor them. I would rip them (smartripper), re author them (Spruce Up), and then burn them (nero) and all of them gave me a similar issue that you are getting. My only solution was to not watch them on my Mac.
Keep in mind this was prior to the release of Panther so I haven't tried playing one in my current machine and with the new tools I haven't made a DVD that way in a while either.

Well, I guess we didn't really want ease of use and compatibility. Can they add a spec for DVD/R DVD\R and DVD#R none of which works with other players too.
It's a paradox of how sharply dull I am.

Maru, do you have panther? Panther is required to access all of those funny DVD formats.
