cable internet network with pc and iBook?
My parents have a pc with a cable internet connection. I am trying to get them to buy an ibook for my dad. How do you make a network happen. Thanks.

You need to get a router. I have a LinkSys BEFSR41 v.2. It's cheap. It's enough for several computers. It should be more than you need. You can find it on eBay.
Once you get it, connect the computers to it with ethernet patch cable. Set your computers to connect to the router by DHCP, open your browser to go to http://192.168.1.1 to begin setup. Set your router to obtain an address automatically, put in your username and password, and get on the internet.
It comes with a manual, but it's pretty simple.

I just got a wireless Linksys router at Amazon for $90. If you're getting an iBook go all the way...screw the wires! You'd also need to pick up an airport card for your iBook and that'll be another hundred duckets. You can always just use a wire until you can afford both!

newegg.com has routers for $50. I have a Netgear RP114 that kicks butt. Love it. We have five computers (and a printer) connected to our cable line. The network is fully switched an everything. *drool*

Yeah, IP is pretty generic. It doesn't matter if it's Winders, Mac, Amiga, or Unix/Linux. It'll work with anything. Appletalk and Windows networking OTOH may require some help. I have no idea how well SMB is implimented in OSX, but I hear it works.
