Alternatives to Walmart.

Okay, I admit it, I like low prices.  I think everyone does.  But, as I have said before, Walmart is "too expensive". If you need that explained, (I don't think anyone does) PM me.

So, what alternatives are there?  Here a  few of mine, and the reasons:

Target: Clean, nicely designed stores. They seem to have the things I'm usually looking for. The employees are very helpful, and the company has a reputation for being very decent to their workers, a rarity in the big retailing industry.

Building 19, Inc:  Only in the Boston area, Building 19 is a very funky place. If you go, dress down. This company sells overstock stuff, inventory from places which have gone under, and fire/flood damaged stuff. (frequently still perfectly good) Employees are known for their humor, and are encouraged to have fun on the job. And yes, they have some workers who have been with them for years.  We don't have "Big Lots" here.

Spags:  A New England Icon, on Route 9 in Shrewsbury. I only head out there once or twice per year. The place has everything, and it is just plain enormous. The company was founded by Wocester native Anthony Borgatti, and is now run by his daughters.  It is now called "Spags 19", but I don't think there is any association with Bldg 19. I could be wrong. Spag's Website

Again, they have employees who have been with them for decades. Best on a weekday. Weekends, the place is packed. They shocked the world a few years ago, when they finally started accepting credit cards. One of the ways they kept prices low, was to be a cash only operation. Times have changed.  Oh yes, if you go, take a large cardboard box, or bag of some kind. There are "no bags at spags".

Best Buy: I have heard mixed  things with respect to how they treat the employees.  But, they have a great selection of DVD's, and the prices are pretty good.  Since the employees are paid hourly and not commissioned, they are not "in your face", something I appreciate. On occasions when I have asked where a certain DVD is, they are nice about it, and take me to it.

L.L. Bean catalog. Expensive?  Nope, not when I have bought shirts, jeans, and a parka which has lasted 10 years, and comes back for more. Their service can't be beat. Eddie Bauer tried to beat them years ago on mail order, and failing this, turned to the shopping mall market.

So, what are some good alternatives to Walmart?

That depends on what you want to buy. There is nothing you can get at Wal-Mart that you can't get with higher quality and cleaner conscience elsewhere.

But at Walmart you can get your skull crushed in, and still get a rain-check for a $30 DVD player. Beat that Building 19.

Don't the New Hampshire stores still exist?

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

I like Wal-Mart for everyday items. Toiletries, etc.

K-Mart is the filthiest store i've ever been in and has the rudest employees. I'm glad most have closed here.

Target just isn't the kind of store i like. I go there occasionally if they're having a really good sale, but i prefer Wal-Mart.

For electronics, i prefer Best Buy or Fry's (outpost.com).

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

In my neck of the woods, there used to be an Ames, but it's gone now. It was pretty good. Nowadays I go to the Target that moved into the space vacated by Wards at Wheaton Plaza.

Often I'll use Route 355 (Rockville Pike) for my shopping. It's shoppers' paradise, just endless strip malls and shopping centers. I'll drive up one side and down the other, popping into several stores along the way. I used to shop the same way on Main Street in Newark, Delaware. The difference is that 355 is an order of magnitude larger.

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

I hate to say it, but the 24 hour superwalmarts have their place.  Most of my grocery shopping is done after hours, and they are the only supermarket open late.

They have also come through when I'm in a bind and need some basic computer gear at 3AM.  wink

Ditto that. I hate supporting a filthy corporate giant like walmart but most of the times I do it out of necessity. Thankfully some HEBs are 24-hrs stores so I don't do groceries at walmart but for many other things I go to walmart. Shame on me sad

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

i love love LOVE l.l. bean... i swear by their camping gear and their backpacks (including bookbags) last forever... i still use the bookbag i had back in like 7th grade... almost 8 years later, it has been beat up pretty decently but i have never thought to myself "hey, i need a new backpack"...

and my hiking boots (an old pair of gore-tex knife edge), purchased about 5 years ago, maybe longer, are still water tight and confortable... i haven't even had to replace the sole on them.. i should, but haven't needed to yet...

their customer service is 99.99999999% impeccable... always helpful, always cheerful, andtheir return/exchange policies are incredible... my dad bought a pair of their full grain gore-tex boots about the same time i got my knife edge boots and we kept finding a water leak near to the toe of the boot... we had to send back maybe 3 pairs of boots for exchange... we never paid a cent for any of the shipping and didn't have to go through an assload of red-tape do it... he finally got a pair that did not leak and it really is about the only pair of shoes he wears anywhere, other than church and that sort of thing...

i could go on and on about them, but then it would get boring...

all in all, l.l. bean =  up  up  up

suck it, trebek.

Fred Meyer in the Seattle area. It's kind of like Target in that it is slightly more "upscale" than Walmart.

Much better selection of CDs and DVDs, and even some decent clothes.

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

Fortunately here in the City of Chicago WalMart hasn't yet been able to find a suitable location for a store-not exactly a lot of 60+acre tracts of open land within the city limits, but it's only a matter of time.

Target (aka Tar-jay) gets my business.   smile

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

People's patronage of WalMart is a classic example of a self fulfilling prophecy:
Already people say they have no choice, as though there are no other pharmacies, or grocery stores.

Has our collective compassion shrunk so much that we'd rather save a few pennies than see a fellow human being get a living wage from their employer?

It's one thing to go in and buy a few toiletries, like Justine does, or make an emergecy excursion at 3am like Altivec. If that were the case then WalMart wouldn't be any bigger than Walgreen's or Radio Shack. WalMart was around for a long time before it decided to take over the world, so to speak. Their current advertising implies that consumers are doing the world a favor by shopping there exclusively and saving a bundle to boot, when the opposite is the case.

I usually shop at Vons for groceries and Rite Aid for meds and toiletries.
Since the strike started, I get my groceries from Stater Bros. The other grocer in town is Food4Less, who has a big sign out front that says," OPEN, NO Labor Disputes Here". No Union, is why. And their food isn't that much less, and the clientele make shopping there very unpleasant. For browsing, I go to Big Lots. For basic electronics, like cables and Nimh batteries, I go to Radio Shack. When I need film developed (rare these days), I go to a local photo shop. My electronic and Mac needs are usually met online. I haven't gone to a Walmart for anything in well over a year, but I don't remember what it was they had that I couldn't get elsewhere in town, when I did get something.
Oh, and I get my horse, pet, and wild bird feeds at the local feed shop - all of which I could have gotten at Walmart.

Oh God, I am so addicted to the chicken bake. And not all the stores have the same menu...some buildings carry those Dove-bar-like ice cream thingies...uuuhhh drool ...some have french fries and gravy...some have knish...and all the free samples you can eat out on "the floor"!

I work for the corporate offices, in the sign department, making most all the signs for all the warehouses worldwide. It's very fun work. Started pushing carts in '87, and moved up through the ranks. 16 years later, I'm still here. Oof. Beats unemployment.

I don't enjoy Walmart.

Re: Alternatives to Walmart.

Where exactly is Building 19, Enigma?

The orginal Building 19 is located in Hingham, in an old warehouse. The owners decided on the name because, the warehouse had the number "19", in enormous typeface, on the side.

The one I go to for bargains, and just to see what they have, is in Natick, where Route 27 and Route 9 intersect. It's very congested with traffic, so if you bike there, be extra alert.  A link to it.

It's funny, shopping in the place.  For example, you might come across some decent looking coats, with the makers label removed. But, examing them, you know it's top quality, and you wonder what the price tag would be if it were being sold in a place such as Macy's or May Company.

A real funny moment:  I knew that "New Kids on The Block" had taken a dirt nap, when I was in Building 19 and saw three shipping pallets of NKOTB merchandise being sold for pennies.

Conspiracy Theorist time:  Does anyone think it's strange that Walmart, and Home depot are both companies which had been around for years, but, starting about 15 years ago, started to get enormous?  How exactly, are they getting funding for this massive buildups?  Just wondering....

Enigma. roll
