I might get to go to Cupertino!
Hey guys!
My family's planning a vacation this summer and I suggested, as a joke, that I go to California to "Mecca." It turns out that, while I'd like to see Cupertino, my brother'd like to see ILM, my mom Disneyland, and my dad (who is a travel writer) has never done a story about California
So, if I went, what could I expect? Are there tours I can take? Stores I must see? Prototypes on display or a history museum on Apple?
Thanks for all your info! I can hardly contain myself

Re: I might get to go to Cupertino!
unfortunately, there isn't a whole lot you can do. unless you have a friend who works at the Apple campus in Cupertino who could attempt to get you guest access, there is no tour available. you can't go past the guard at the entrance.
the one (and only) thing you can do is go to the company store. it's basically a little shop where you can buy macs, accessories and various Apple branded goodies, (t-shirts, keychains, pens, etc). (this is nothing like the new Apple retail stores. it's just a little shop).
If you're going to be anywhere near there already, I would say go for it. If it's really out of the way for you then it's probably not too worth it.
the choice is yours. (or perhaps your parents!)

I'll take mediocresau's advice with my new digital camera (woot) and iPhoto.

Re: I might get to go to Cupertino!
Been there too with my family, we were on a road trip up the coast and I looked out the car window just in time to the sign "Cupertino City Limit." After making my dad drive up the embankment we wound around until we found 1 Infinite Loop... Like most have said, not much there, though I thought the store was pretty cool, lots of Apple stuff you can't easily get unless you went there. They also have cones in the parking lot with the Apple logo on them, took a lot of debating before I decided it was best not to steal one
. Also be sure to drive "the loop" and see 2-6 Infinite Loop, and keep your eyes open as you pass the loading dock, I saw boxes for the eMac a full 2 weeks before it was released, and didn't even know they were eMac boxes until I saw one a month latter, but it was still pretty cool...

Re: I might get to go to Cupertino!
There are ColorSync user group meetings there once a month(free pizza) and lots of free seminars on migrating to OS X server and such. Just sign up and you can go
I've been 4 times and would go more but I've been too busy.
They have bridged airport everywhere which is kinda cool.

Re: I might get to go to Cupertino!
I really want to work for Apple, but I don't want to move to So. Cal. Something about earthquakes, riots, 500 sq ft houses costing $1M and lack of water makes me want to stay away. Apple should move to someplace more gooder and less like hell.

You make the trip anyway you want to. If you want it to be good, it will be.

Re: I might get to go to Cupertino!
Why doesn't Apple do tours? It would be a revenue generater (Would it be or is this idea for mac fanatics?) Just keep the tour party from anyhting secret, it could tour the factory (Do Apple products get assembled at the campus?)... whats so secret about that? Come to think of it, what is so secret at Apple apart from the R&D department... maybe they are making more than computers at the Apple campus

You never know how much tour guides would cost, and how much planning it would take to keep them away from secret things
And no, I don't think they assemble products at the Apple campus. I think it's in Malaysia and Japan and some other places.
But I'm still surprised they don't let you in any of the buildings or anything! It's a damn shame.
