Wi-Fi and Airport interfering

Problem: my Wi-Fi access point and my Airport base station are located 5 feet apart, and operating on the same frequency.

I guess the surprising thing is that they work OK most of the time.  But every once in a while my Wi-Fi loses its signal lock on the water tower, where my ISP have their transmitter located.  Sometimes it struggles for a minute or two before it can restore the connection.

So....  I don't know how to resolve this problem, short of packing away the Airport and stringing ethernet cable all around.  I would really prefer not to.

Is there any way to set up a 802.11a network on Macintosh?  Or could I shield the Wi-Fi access point with . . . I dunno, aluminum foil or something?
