Ethernet problem connecting two computers
Hey, i just recently got a new 17inch iMac
. I have been using a old beige desktop 233mhz G3 and it has many files (2 gigs about) that I want to transfer over to the new hard drive, what would be the best way to do this??
I have tried connecting the 2 with an Ethernet cable and enabling FileSharing using Appletalk and TCP/IP, but both have failed to work. I have tried this in OS X and OS 9.
I beleive the problem is with the old G3 because when I try and change Appletalk to the Ethernet port in OS 9 it says "An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet. Make sure your network connections are correct." (The port works because I can connect it to my cable modem and it works). The Connect to Server.. thing doesn't see the other computer.
Is there a special cable I need? Is there another way (there's a a couple gigs of files..)? Please give me suggestions as I am supposed to give the old computer to my sister ASAP.

PS - Other than this problem I love this computer and the screen is amazing.

Re: Ethernet problem connecting two computers
You need a cross-over ethernet cable. You can't use the same patch cable you use with your DSL unless you run both the computers though a router ot hub.
