Software... Commercial version vs. Academic version...?

I am trying to snag Final Cut Pro off of Ebay and I keep seeing "academic versions" available that are unopened and registerable. What is the difference between the academic version and the commercial version? In general what are the differences between versions and does anyone know what the exact differences are for this specific software?

I got a copy of DVD Studio Pro a few months ago... it was a full blown version but had no manuals or box... only the CD and the activation password. It has worked really well (took some time to learn how to use it 'cuz I had no book!!!!) with no catches at all. It was only $185 as opposed to a commercial version at $1000. These "academic" Final Cut Pro versions are going for around $400 as opposed to the commercial $1000 also. I just need to know what I am getting....

Thanks-
Cam

Re: Software... Commercial version vs. Academic version...?

At the Apple Web site, Final Cut Pro 3 Academic is going for $299.00. I'm pretty sure it's full-featured. I buy most of my software at academic prices, and 99.9% of the time the academic version is the exact same software everyone else is buying but sold to students and teachers at a discount. If you want, go to the Apple store and click education (in the middle of the menu bar) and just pretend you're at any of the schools, which will let you browse if not buy (I think you'll need to submit a student or faculty ID to actually make a purchase).
