Re: Scary Wal-Mart piece.

EVERY Walmart store I have ever gone into was a dump.  I just don't get why they are so popular.  Sure, they have some good prices, but is it worth it when you walk out of the store feeling dirty?

Re: Scary Wal-Mart piece.

Screw tourist attractions, when I go to the US I am going to go to a WalMart.

Efficient customer service?  Nope. The problem was that he was proudly wearing a t-shirt which bore the logo of "Teamsters local 25".   Once spotted, they wanted to make damn sure he had zero contact with any of the associates. They were extremely careful so as not to cross the line.

I don't understand. Can you explain?

The Teamsters are a labor union.  Labor unions are able to successfully organize the employees in such a manner that they can exercise some power over their employers - and if the employers refuse to play nicely with the union, they find themselves with all their employees outside the front doors with picket signs.

WalMart doesn't want that kind of bad juju.

Re: Scary Wal-Mart piece.

Sorry Benighted, I didn't see your Australian location.  I had assumed that everyone knew what the teamsters union is.

The Brotherhood of Teamsters is a large and powerful union here in America. Mostly, their members are truck drivers, but some other trades are represented as well.  More on their history can be read at their website

The man who entered the Hudson Walmart had simply gone in for basic items, and the store was on his way home. But, Walmart management spotted the t-shirt, and was apparently afraid that he had come in for other reasons, so they shadowed him.

Home Depot, built on the Walmart business model, is also very anti-union, and has been known to fire anyone who even suggests organizinng.  There are not as many web pages dealing with this with respect to Home Depot however.

I keep asking why some companies feel so compelled to treat their employees so badly, and the only answers I can come up with are Ego, power, and just plain bullying.  That's just what I think, anyone got any other ideas?

Re: Scary Wal-Mart piece.

4. Nothing will be manufactured in this country at all. Not a bicycle, not a t-shirt, not a single toy, not a pair of bluejeans or even a bar of soap. Nope, nothing.

Would that be a bad thing?  If manufacturing has become a low-margin, high-risk, bottom-end sector of our economy, why not let it be farmed out of the US?  Let other countries provide the low-pay laborers, deal with the environmental challenges and absorb the low end jobs, while the US jobs retain the high-end jobs...We lost the low end, but added the high end.  When manufacturing jobs go overseas, the high-end jobs that require high skill levels, education and training stay right here in the USA, and the low end jobs go overseas.  Is that a bad thing?

However, it's not that simple.  Now, CEO's who are eager to increase the size of their multi-million dollar bonuses are farming IT and other high tech jobs out to other countries as well.  The bottom line is that it's the wage difference between the third world and the United States that is driving this.  To fix it, you'd have to pay our workers what those in the third world made and that represents an unacceptable sacrifice of our standard of living.

Unless something is done soon (read: serious tarriffs and penalties on companies who shift jobs outisde the US) we will be reduced to an economy where the only jobs left are those which require face-to-face contact between the customer and the worker.  Such an economy will neither sustain us as a wealthy nation, nor provide enough jobs to our workers.

So if you're exicted about a future where everyone is (a) a CEO, (b) working in restaurants, (c) working in health care, (d) is a repair tech for things too large to fedex to mexico, or (e) is unemployed...

...keep the Bushies in power.

Re: Scary Wal-Mart piece.

I went to my local walmart to buy some blank cd's the other day. Hey who else is gonna sell ya 50 blank cd-rs at 3:30 in the morning? So I went in wearing my old painters union shirt (again 3:30am). I toow as shadowed.

However being wiley to the ways of the walmart evil-doers I would specifically wait until being shadowed and quickly go to the nearest employee who was not a manager and start talking to them about the union. After turning around I could tell that the managers were getting frustrated with this. So I said VERY loudly, "Hey you'r enot gonna fire or otherwise nail this employee because I instigated a converstaion with him about a subject that would make him a happier employee? You wouldn't do anything like that would you <managers name>?"

Ya know what? He got very red faced, turned around and left. smurfer. I gave that employee my e-mail and told him if you get fired for talking to me, I'll pay for the lawyer. I made sure the manager heard me as he walked away.

They gave me cd-r's and told me to leave.

Fine. I got to have some fun and got free merchandise. If I were an employee I would walk around with one of those mcicro recorders and make sure the company was aware of it. If they have a problem with me making sure that Ih eard what my boss told me correctly, then they can state it out loud. This would of course be turned over to the lawyer as evidence.

I have given a lot of thought to getting a part-time job there just to smurf with them. When I eventually get canned for some reason that could be considered a hostile work environment or other such bullsmurf I would initiate a class action lawsuit.

smurf walmart.

nicely done, Temetka. You know that they only cared about one thing though, and that was getting you out of the store. It is possible that you may have made it onto some sort of list.

I would not be surprised to learn that walmart uses video footage to monitor and photograph people they just don't like.

Anyone care to guess where they get people to be managers and supervisors?  Are they all ex KGB and STASI thugs, or what?  Well, I guess not. One thing I have learned, is that there is no shortage of sadistic people.

Then they don't know who they are tangling with. Go ahead target me. Surveil me. Database me.

I will hunt you [Walmart] down and make you [Walmart] pay. Not for my beneift. Oh no. You see that would be too petty, too small minded. I would make a public matter over every form of media available from free cable, to radio, to the internet and the papers.

I would take pictures of employees and their cars. Get their license plate numbers and make it real personal. If they wanna smurf with me, be careful, I smurf back.

Big Brother may be here, and he may be livin' large, but I will spite on principal.

These kinds of tactics are employed by them (not outright, that would be stupid) but we all know they do it. I beleive in the power of the individual. I have the ability to atleast make them see me as a big enough threat that they would leave me alone simply because they fear what I might unveil on their sorry butts if they didn't.

I have been told to leave other Wal-Marts on the basis that I was disrupting their employees production. I had my lawyer on the cell beofre you can say lickety split. I took names.

You know what? I am greeted by name when I visit those stores now. It's amazing what the threat of a lawsuit will do to change peoples attitudes real quick.

The sad thing is the extreme lengths to which I have gone to achieve this. Whats even worse is that I enjoyed doing it. It was empowering to say the least.

Today Wal-Mart, tomorrow the RIAA!
