Re: YES! Just got JA!

It is ofcourse, fun. However, I do have an issue with it. I am runnning JA on an 800Mhz G4 iMac with a GeForce 2 MX and 768MB of RAM. However, when I run JA by itself (with even the finder shut down) it hitches quite a bit. I've turned to graphics to their lowest detail and the sound quality to low. This helps but it still "sticks" every so often. I HAVE downloaded the 1.0.1a patch and still have the problem. I don't understand... I meet and exceed the requirements....?

Anyway, MP is outstanding! No problems there. And seige mode is worth the whole game!

YeahHA!

You know, the weird thing about this is that I'm not seeing that at all, and that's something I definitely know was fixed in the 1.01a patch, so I took it upon myself to test it now from a clean install and running the 1.01a updater.

Well, it turns out that the patcher doesn't really patch the app, it just changes the Info.plist file inside them, which isn't all that effective. wink

Anyway, I bundled up the proper builds from the 1.01a patch and put an archive here:

Edit: Just got approval to give the finger to the whole 1.01a patch business and instead release the 1.01b patch, which additionally fixes the weather issues with the first Vjun map:

Installation is manual - just drag n drop these new apps onto the ones from your current installation.

Re: YES! Just got JA!

My experience with JA on a friends computer (PC/Winders) is this:

On the same machine running Jedi Outcast, I can maxxx out everything except resoultion (which is at 1240x1024.. big enough?) and get average 60-90fps.. depending on map, and the amount of complexitcy(sic) of the textures. (P4, GF4mx)

With JA, it is BARELY playable at 1024x768 with maxx settings.  To get the same performance in JA as in JO, My friend had to play at either 800x600 with max textures/color... or 1024x768 with 16-bit/medium settings.

What I don't get, is that it is the SAME FRIKKEN GAME ENGINE!  The graphics are the same, so it should render identically to JO, but it doesn't.   I noticed that the Windoz version of JA has a higher DX requirement (can't remember if it's 8.0 or 9..), while JO used minimal DX.. for Input or Sound, but that's it, allowing OpenGL to handle the graphics rendering.  JA looks like it uses OpenGL, yet.. it seems like it uses DX3D.

[/rant]

Summary?  If you are barely running JO, don't expect to run JA.  If you are bragging before about your high resolutions, textures, and frame-rates in JO, be prepared to be like the guys barely running JO, when playing JA.

Lets hope that future patch releases increase performance.

Actually, there are a few differences. Dynamic saber glow (an option not in Jedi Knight 2) is definitely more resource-intensive. Turn it off to get framerate speedups on the PC. This doesn't apply to the Mac port - it runs at equal speed with it on or off.

Other than that, the performance should be nearly identical to Jedi Knight 2. At least it is on my Mac when I compare roughly equivalent scenes in the two games. If you can give me an example of where performance is dramatically different, then I'll look into it.

Well, you could click on the link to the patch in the message that you quoted. wink

Also, the Aspyr ftp site hosts it even though the web page is still outdated (we're working on that):
