Firewall for OS9

I remember a couple of months ago on the Circuit Board section about the Firewall for OSX. Looks very easy. Just press Start and there you go. But what about for OS9? My art  director said he need a firewall. He had no probelms. But someone else suggested  yo get a software called "Net Barrie". Has anybody tried or trying this Firewall for this operating system.

Even though I don't venture on that side unless I have to, I just want to make sure.

Before I hook up the DSL modem I just want see more opinions or input here.

Thanks guys. smile

Re: Firewall for OS9

Firewall software for OS 9 is probably not necessary.  I haven't used it in OS 9, but I have a feeling that if you get something, go with Norton or Netbarrier.  I hate Symantec, but their personal Firewall is supposed to be okay, though you need at least 9.2.  Netbarrier looks like it has a lot more features and will even work with OS 8!  Either of 'em would probably work.

PGP has a pretty good one too. Personally I don't use one in OS9.

Re: Firewall for OS9

My experience with MacOS 9 suggests that it is inherently strong enough as-is.  Have a white-hat friend ping you on a network.  He'll have a hard time even figuring out what kind of computer you've got let along finding any holes (unless you expressly turned something on).  MacOS 9 sends the least amount of data back to the hacker of just about any OS out there.

Re: Firewall for OS9

I use Doorstop Personal Edition on my OS9 box but honestly a firewall on OS9 isent really needed because OS9 just dosent have the services most exploits are looking for and the few accesible services OS9 does have are off by default so its pretty damn secure just as it is.
When I check my FW log its always detecting Windows Printer share and file sharing sniffs, I dont think I have ever even seen an exploit aimed at Macs come up.

Re: Firewall for OS9

if its a "real" OS9 sys, and NOT classic i would never use a firewall on it. there are no mac exploits out there.
but if its "classic"-modus under OSX i would think about, because the carrier system OSX makes the situation worse...
but then you can use the build in firewall in OSX, but i dont know how well it really does its job.

I'm sorry but that's BS.
Rare, but hackers have broken into OS 9 Macs.
A couple of times, it's been pretty bad - read thru your past various Macintosh news websites . . .
The reason you don't see it often is that the Mac's ports are closed by default, and the black-hats normally don't bother.  Those with an "Everest complex" will, tho'.

Best third-party Mac Firewall is Intego's NETBARRIER.

Re: Firewall for OS9

If the computer is going to be connected to the net directly, ie not on a LAN, then the best bet is to put it behind a gateway. You can pick these up dirt cheap (less than the cost of software firewalls in many cases) and they provide positive firewall protection that is extremely cracker-resistant. Software firewalls are good but it is hard to beat dedicated hardware. Plus, a gateway will offload PPPoE chores from the Mac and allow you to share the internet connection.

There are lots of such devices available from various manufacturers. Go to any electronics retailer like Future Shop, Staples or Radio Shack and they will probably have at least 2 or 3 different brands in stock. I use a D-Link DI 704 and it has been rock solid for a few years now.

Re: Firewall for OS9

I agree that an internet router with built-in firewall is best, though I don't consider it mandatory for MacOS 9. Even so, I have an internet router to be 100% safe.   If you want to check the robustness of your firewall run Shields Up! at www.grc.com
