Temporary Server up!
I got my server working fine, and it can hold 8, but I could push it up to 10 if need be, it just may be a little laggy.
It is called [MA]temp server
The question is now, should I make a password so only [MA] people can join? And also, this is my first time really hosting, and I played around with it a bit but I cant seem to get the maps to rotate in CTF. Any help would be appreciated, and look for me tonight.

Re: Temporary Server up!
i would say leave a password off, i think at least initially we should allow the general public to play on the server. as to how to get maps rotated, i'm not familiar with the dedicated server stuff for halo... in fact i'm not familiar with hardly anything server-related for halo. anything y'all find out would be greatly appreciated

Re: Temporary Server up!
An IP address would be great, as I can't find the server in the server list for some reason.

Re: Temporary Server up!
I can try to run it dedicated, but I'm not sure what implications that has. Will it slow down my machine hugely? If not, then I can do that, but for now it's only running when I'm playing, which will be on and off the the next while, that being until monday.

Re: Temporary Server up!
Unless Santa has made me really forgetful for Christmas... a dedicated server is just that, a machine dedicated to being a server. Better at being one, because none of its power is used for anything else- i.e., you can't play on it. You could leave it up and running for others while you go out, etc. if you want to be charitable.

Re: Temporary Server up!
Can I really leave my computer on for... 4 days unattended? I mean I guess I could, but it would be weird. Leaving it open for so long isn't inviting hackers or anything?

You have a Mac.
If you don't pw-protect it, then tell someone the admin pw so they can boot tkers, lamers, etc.

Re: Temporary Server up!
That's the thing, I'm a complete newb at this. I can set it up, but how can I make someone the admin? How do they log in? I'm willing to make my christmas (holiday) present to the [MA]Halo community to set up and run a server while I'm gone, but I just need a pretty much total walkthrough doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Temporary Server up!
Last I heard, the only dedicated server available is for Windows, and it's not included with the game (you have to download it separately).

yeah, and if it's anything like medal of honor (which i still don't think the dedicated server option works properly), there might not ever be a mac dedicated halo

Re: Temporary Server up!
Leaving it running on my computer would be hell on the power bill though, so I'm not sure. Are there really any other ideas to persue?

Re: Temporary Server up!
well, assuming you had both a laptop with a good processor and a dedicated halo server, you could run it on that... it wouldn't take much power at all, at least compared to a tower.
or, as was suggested earlier, we could all pool money together to buy a server from a hosting company.

By dedicated server you mean just leave the game running on the computer, right?

Re: Temporary Server up!
no. a dedicated server runs much the same as a non-dedicated server (the type you start in game), only you can't play. there's no gui for you, only a console with game messages and whatnot, thus requiring much less system resources and, assuming you have the bandwidth, much faster than a non-dedicated server.
although interestingly, one of my buddies had a dedicated mohaa server on his pc, and then proceeded to use mohaa to connect to and play on his own dedicated server... weird.
feel free to correct me if i'm slightly innacurate or just plain wrong about stuff, or if i left something out.

Re: Temporary Server up!
Allright people, it will be running today for awhile, and I'll be in and out. I'll try and keep it up, but we'll see. (dont they make pills for that now?
) I't s a test run, IP is 10.0.1.2:2302. If that doesn't work, try looking for it on the server browser, it's called [MA]temp server.
Happy Hunting!

Re: Temporary Server up!
hmm i can't connect using ip or see your server. is it on now? if so, perhaps there is something wrong on my end. OR, looking at your ip that looks like the local ip for your mac. if i remember correctly you said you were on an airport network? well i have a basestation too and i know it always takes 10.0.1.1 and then dishes out accordingly the first computer that connects gets 10.0.1.2 the ip you gave. that isn't gonna work for people outside your network. in halo you need to put in the ip of your basestation (which you can find using the airport admin utility) followed by :2302 also, make sure you map that port to your computers local ip using the aiport admin utility as well. i know this as ive hosted a few ghost recon games and went through this problem.
but then again, i could be completely wrong. however i feel somewhat confident in my beliefs here.
