Re: There Is No God.

Oh yeah, there's a God.

It seems to many, that God has been silent for so many years.

I think our skepticism comes in a day and age where information is everywhere.  We can look up flight times and ticket prices in moments.  Yet, when we try to access God in the same manner, we feel that He is nonexistent or noncaring.

Depending on which version of the Bible you read, there was a period when God was silent for 400 years.  And then suddenly, the Messiah appeared just as foretold.

I think we are in a similiar time period today.  Not only do I believe in God (whose Son chose to die as atonement for our sins and allows His Spirit to dwell within us), but I believe that God is getting ready to do great things.

Beyond the rhetoric and beyond the words, I have seen some pretty cool miracles that affirm my belief in God.  I have no reason for why I would see these things and others wouldn't.  But I know that they are true.  (I've posted about them in other threads.)

"prove it!"

The weak in society want proof for everything; they are not willing to accept on faith anything without some defined proof.

Yeah, that's really weak, isn't it? I mean, admitting that there are certain things we simply cannot know/understand, rather than saying, "must be God's doing!"

For them, nothing.

Unless I'm mistaken, under your belief system, that is definitely not for you to decide.

Several years ago, scientists discovered neutrinos (little neutrons) within the mass of atoms. Although they know scientifically they exist, proving it was, and still is, impossible. Even the most advanced scanning/tunnneling microscope is far too primitive to reveal neutrinos; but every physical scientist subscribes to their existence.

And your point is..?

alien: if you go through life with the staccato statement  "prove it!"; demanding definitive evidence for this and that,

Who says I do?

you will miss life itself.

I'll be the judge of that, thankyouverymuch.

Indeed, I cannot put my hand on the Milky Way galaxy, no can I say with authoritative proof such a galaxy exists, and, in fact, no astromer can point to definate size, shape, or extent quantifications, but they all say, yes, it exists.

That is irrelevant. It just so happens that assuming that the milky way galaxy actually exists provides a consistent system to work with when figuring out the world around us.

Such is God and belief in him.

No, that is a cop-out.

Want proof? You want the easy way to faith.

No, I don't I don't care for that.

It is not that easy!

I never said it would be.

[OverBoy is] willing to post a topic called "There Is No God" just the day before the most holy day of the year, Christmas, the birth of Christ.

And why not? Since he has declared himself an atheist, this is, after all, the centerpoint of his beliefs. You seem easily upset for someone usually so willing to deal out insults and inflammatory comments.

Re: There Is No God.

Overboy, I appreciate the journey you've taken. From what I've read here, we share many of the same ideals...but I wound up traveling the opposite way. I totally agree with you on the need to openly question, and I believe that should always be the case, even within religion. The idea that to question is blasphemy is, in fact, a blasphemy itself, and not in sync with a decent biblical interpretation (I think). I've always been brought up to test everything, but at the same time note that the authority of God isn't in question when I'm testing things. It would be like testing a cop...you can ask him questions about why he decided to put so-and-so in jail, but you do not go and kill someone to see if the cop will arrest you or not...not a great analogy, but I hope at least one person can see what I'm trying to get at.

Anyways, I hope you have a great holiday season Overboy. Keep your stick on the ice. smile

Same goes to the rest of you!

Re: There Is No God.

Nakisisa, thanks, and happy holidays
to you as well. I'm not clear on the 'stick on
the ice' reference, but I'm sure you mean well.

The cop reference is a pretty valid one, I may
plagerize it at some point (which I'm prone to do
[but I'll say something like: 'a wise person once
said']).

Camp David, by '...for all men' I'll assume
you mean '... for all men, women, and children of
every shape and form'.

May Jehovah bless you. May Buddah keep you safe.
May G_d watch over you. May Allah protect you. May
Yahweh (sp?) guide you. May non-believers and the
righteous of the world over respect your path.

.. and Merry Christmas, on this your holiest of days.

I'm convinced that everything I've/We've
accomplished has been at the expense of our own
sweat and at the might of two bare hands, not the
result of any 'greater' being that passes on
blessings in exchange for idolatry.

If you had achieved anything in your life you'd realize that human qualities are not enough to succeed, you need good luck.

The idea of a God or Gods appears to be a
form of crowd (mind) control designed to promote
the ideology of a ruling class.

Communist. Religion is necessary, even if it's total bullsmurf. Ethics must be standardized for social agreement.

The question: what do/don't you believe and why?

I don't know.

Re: There Is No God.

I personally don't believe in god, and haven't for over a decade.

If by some miracle (and, of course, it would have to be) there is one, I'd like to think he'd cut me a break, since I simply used my god-given mind to deduce that he wasn't there.

"Hey God, nothin' personal, you know. You shouldn't be upset, unless you're the jealous, vain, and vengeful type, in which case, I don't really care if you'd have me or not, since you're just as petty as the humans you created. If I got you all wrong, please forgive me for that too. You've had some way smurfed up people claiming to be speaking your Words."

It's not that I do or do not beleive in god. I ask myself if it really matters in the first place. I have come to the conclusion that it does not.

even the greatest minds..(steven hawking) suggests that although we can explain how things in the universe may have came to be and may even be able to pinpoint the birth of the universe..but someone or something had to put the whole thing into motion. even as a great mind he will not deny that God probably started the whole thing.

and to "There is no God" ... prove that there isn't.

But you were willing to post a topic called "There Is No God" just the day before the most holy day of the year, Christmas, the birth of Christ.

I seem to remember you mentioning that you are Catholic, Camp David, but I notice several issues on which you seem to disagree with the Pope. Issues such as capital punishment, and more importantly, the question of what is the holiest of holy days. Being raised Catholic myself, I was wondering why you consider Christmas to be holier than, say, Easter. I guess it's not really a pressing issue, I was just wondering.

Re: There Is No God.

things are just getting bad for the believers, its almost like our beliefs are a big joke and we are foolish for believing in such things. and atheist and agnostic are so eager to debunk everything Christians believe. look at the existence of this topic. "there is no God" .

poor kids that grow up without God. they dont learn anything about him at home. they cant be taught anything about him in School. its no wonder there are so many people that dont believe. and there will just be more and more as time goes on. meanwhile it will be harder and harder, for Christians to express our beliefs and help keep our childrens faith up while they get rediculed in school for believing in Christ. if we try to mention something about Christ we will get sued. the threat of being sued for expressing Christianity now is a "legal gagg" on our beliefs and being able to express them openly without fear of legal action against us.

Re: There Is No God.

Quite frankly, you can't KNOW that there is or isn't a God. You can BELIEVE that there is or isn't, but without proof on either side, you can't KNOW. It's just a belief, whether weak or firm. I'm an agnostic, so I don't say whether I think there is or isn't. There's no way to prove it. That's why religion is based on faith.

And don't take CD as representitive of Christianity. He's a twit, and I think the whole board will agree on that one.

Re: There Is No God.

I am agnostic.

There may be a God and there may not. The only evidence I see is that someone told someone else who told someone else who told someone else[and repeat].

I can feel when there is someone else in the room with me. When I look in their eyes, I can tell they are looking back, so I tend to believe that people have souls, but I see the same thing when I look at my pets, so I tend to believe that they have souls, too, but as for the idea of God, I'm not sure.
