webhosting??
I'm planning on starting a small online business. I plan on using html and css with php and mysql. My question is about webhosting. I'm very new at this so I'm not sure how things work. I have a linux box to design and test which I was thinking of ultimately having the server on with some sort of connection to the internet. I have read alot of people searching for webhosters. Is it even possible to have my own server say with a dsl line or so? Or do I NEED to find a webhost company?
thank you in advance

Re: webhosting??
You don't NEED to, but that might be a better option for you. You can easily serve things off the Linux box just by buying a domain name and setting your IP as the DNS (I think...).
However, if you're new to running a server (configuring security, etc.), you might want to just say $8.00 a month to have it hosted by a hosting company.
If you're in need of a hosting company, check out PowWeb (powweb.com). They're cheap and give you access to almost everything on the system (even httpd.conf... if you ask)
Hope this helps some!

You can look at DayanaWeb as well.
Full featured and cheap. I can't vouch for the quality, but I'm considering it - the free hosting thing is slow and limited.

Re: webhosting??
PLEASE don't host it from home. That is becoming common now, and often I come across sites that are dead or slow because someone is using their home computer as a server.
Home PC != server
I have used AIT for about 5 years now and recently upgraded to their IMHIP Advanced service. It's a killer setup. They are one of the top providers in the nation.

I highly recommend them for support and service.

Not exactly. The domain name record must point to a name server. If you enter your ip in the DNS it won't work. A domain request must connect to a name server. It is possible to setup a DNS on the same computer, but that defeats the purpose of the whole thing. The DNS should be independent of the web server.
There are dynamic dns services around that will work (I don't know the name of any, but someone here will)
Best bet, get a host.

Re: webhosting??
So, basically using a webhost would be better because of connectivity issues? I've been wondering for a while why there is so much talk about webhosting rather than self hosting. You guys are a great resource that answer questions that aren't explicitly given in books or not given at all.
Thanks!

Re: webhosting??
DirectNIC offers such a dynamic dns service. I'm sure there are others.
In addition to what's been said already, the big problem with home hosting is cost. First, you need a static IP address, and that costs about as much as a host will cost (typically, depends on your ISP). Second, you need bandwidth. Most ISPs offer fast broadband downstreams, but not upstreams, and you will be serving with your upstream. So the pipe you'll want will cost as much as your car. Third: the DNS service is a few bucks as well.
You can get a host starting at around $7 a month. You can get bigger plans as your needs increase.

Re: webhosting??
My recommendation: eNom. They take care of as much or as little as you desire, from registration to hosting to automatically setting up a page to text message your cell phone ( :!: ).
They're not the cheapest on the planet, but their service is worth the slightly higher cost to me. Of course, I do hosting as well, but usually it's for a pretty specific niche and often for my design/development clients.
