Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

So now that the Mac JK:A has been out for like a week, and some of you have it already, or have played the demo... What do you think about it?

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

Biggest complaint from me is performance related. I think its due to the shiny textures in it now. I noticed it tends to take heavier hits in performance whenever the textures have shiny surfaces. If there was a way to turn that off then it might work better on some maps.

I just tried multiplayer today over LAN and aside from some performance issues there too, it was quite enjoyable. However playing it online i'm sure everyone will be using dual blades which is gonna suck if ya get overwhelmed and you only got one blade wink.

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

I think it's somewhere between the top 2.

I'm coming to enjoy it the more I play, getting used to the differences, finding out new things to enjoy. Letting go of old things, finding new equivalents.

Performance degrades on larger maps with more people, not unlike jk2, maybe overall I'd say a 10-15 percent decrease in the ability to have the highest settings run smoothly, needing to reduce some settings to stay above 40-60 fps, whereas jk2 would be 60-70 in a similar scenario.

But, I am playing on an old gen laptop (1GHZ TiBook 133bus, 512sdram radeon 900064MB 5200rpm HD) so I should expect to sacrifice some resolution in order to play smoothly.

When I ever upgrade or get an additional desktop, I expect to get more from the game, of course, that isn't enough reason to upgrade, I need an additional system for work anyway.

In the long run, I do think this is the future and jk2 is definitely dying. Frankly, I hope we switch the server to jk3 in another month or 2. Perhaps we will start a test server in the near future before the change happens.

Complaints aside, there is much fun to be had here, It does expand the game in a lot of ways.

I liken the switch from JK2 to JK3 to most people's switch from OS9 to OSX:
1. Great expectations
2. Shock and awe at requirements and changes to fundamental standards
3. Frustration at learning curve
4. Discovery, understanding and then acceptance of new benefits
5. Love
6. Forsaking the old and ridicule of those who hold on to the old smile
7. ???
8. profit!

I am between 3 and 4 now with JK3, but with much more to learn in order to understand all the new stuff, probably a few weeks worth.

Mish, you would love melee! Fisticuffs, judo throws, all types of kicking. In one move, you grab opponent by the head, two deep punches to the stomach then one big one to the face and he goes flying, lol!

Hmmmm... I'd say I'm between 1 and 2. But I thought the first step was admitting you have a problem?  wink

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

Melee?!?!  D00D!  I'm sold!   Ain't nothing like going medieval on someone!

I may pick up this game sooner if everyone stops playing JK2.. the only REAL reason I'm still holding on is money.  If I was a rich bastard, I'd already have it; and on a dual G5 powermac too.   So, job first, then broadband, THEN JKA.  Stupid reallife priorities...  mad

I assume that the PC version will run nicely on my comp (P4 1.8Ghz; 256 MB RAM (DDR); GeForceFX 5200 128MB, running at 4xAGP (cuz of mobo max of 4x.. otherwise it'd be 8x); etc...)  My only real hit is memory, which I plan to upgrade to 512 after awhile (or if I get a good deal, I'll fill all three slots with 256 sticks).  As far as running it under a API translator (WineX), there is no real performance hit, and the *nix Nvidia drivers are better too.

EDIT:  By the way; I'm the one that voted "I'll still own you", cuz In reality, IT DOESN'T MATTER!!   JK:O, JK:A, UT, Q3, Drinking, I'll still pwn j00!   lol

I trust the opinion of a lot of folks here, so I ask; should I get JK:A first, or Halo?

For my money, Halo is insane amounts of fun! Yes, that's where I've disappeared to lately, Halo has claimed my everlasting soul.  blush

If your machine can hack it, I'd say Halo. JKII will be around for a while yet, and Halo sounds like a topn of fun. I plan to wait a couple weeks for prices to drop, and then get both, but I'm just a crazy hedonistic college student. (Not to mention a dirty hippy! wink)

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

Since you already have JK2, you might want to try halo since it is a completely different game.

But JK3 is good too.

Either way, you can't loose.

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

sneaky   Maybe I shouldn't have put up that LAST option...

OK lets try this now:

If you LIKE Jedi Academy say "Aye!".  If you don't like Jedi Academy say "Nay!".   If Halo is better than Academy, say "Halo rocks!".  If Jedi Academy is better than Halo, say "Academy rulez!".

Thank you.  Seriously, I need to know what to spend my $50 on.

P.S.:  This isn't a "bitch" out, seriously.  Take it lightheartedly.

See the smiley? --->  smile   That means its OK! Thank you.  I'll get off my soapbox now.  *slowly walks away*

Re: Now that JK:A is out, what do you think about it?

Um, I like halo and JA.

I'm over JK2... time to switch the server to JA. The sooner you all get JA the sooner we can switch the server IMO.

Bio and I have been talking and we are working on setting up a JA temp server possibly in a matter of days.

If you buy halo, we can't play mac to PC yet.

So get JA mish.
