Good news is that 2K4 is suppose to be backward compatible with 2K3. So we can keep the server at 2K3 until we get enough peeps to warrant the server upgrade. Or we could just throw caution to the wind and upgrade right away.

Same here!

As to when to upgrade the server, I'd say let's get the game in hand and play with a week or two (OK... OK... a day) before moving the server to it. But from the looks of every thing I've seen 2K4 will be the way to go.

Re: UT2K4 baby!

hate to burst everyone's bubble, but at MWSF '04 it was running on G5s with Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Special Editions, and it looked like ASS. Maybe hitting 40 FPS.

I dunno, a cheap P4 2.2 would run 2k4 better than a G5.

I don't get it. The game uses the same engine. Never would I guess that 2K4 would have any steeper sys requr. Maybe a little because now that it has to track peeps and vehicals. Anyone see sys specs yet?....NM got'em they're the same for PC.

I would think that vehicles will add to the computation. Also VIP will suck some bandwidth both locally and OL. Dual processor aware components could help with the VIP locally but it's all still going up and down the same pipe. I wonder how much of an added strain to a server the VIP will be.

Voice over IP should be pretty negligable.. Half-Life has had it for years, and it makes little difference there, after all.

Well when X squad was into ladders I hosted the Roger Wilco channel and played UT99 at the same time. There was very little impact on my DP500. By that I mean I never noticed a decrease in FPS or increase in lag.

Update from Ryan's finger page:

Unreal Tournament 2004:
So if you want to see UT2004, right now, if you want to feel it in your
hands and drive the vehicles and see new gametypes and shoot the sniper
rifle and bask in the beauty of the new maps...you have to play it on a
Mac. We're showing it at MacWorld for the next few days...hands on,
networked together. Come play.

UPDATE: Okay, hey, if your reading the article on insidemacgames.com:
1) The speech-to-text thing for talking to the bots is Windows-only. It
uses a library from Microsoft. I was misquoted, I'm sorry if you were
looking forward to this. Voice-over-IP _will_ work on the Mac, and
work seemlessly between Windows, Linux, and Mac users.
2) I'm not promising the Mac version will be out first; it might happen by
a tiny bit, but it's not going to be some sort of World Exclusive if it
does. What you should be walking away with is the understanding that
ut2004 will be ready with the PC version, and you don't have to wait for
    months and months.
3) "Halo rip-off" vehicles: okay, look, your going to see some similarities
with Halo, and Battlefield 1942. Cross-polination is a way of life in the
game industry, and we'd be fools to avoid things that have worked well in
other titles. We aren't looking to clone Halo, honest.
4) If you run a game site and are wondering why I don't return emails asking
for interviews, refer to points #1, #2, and #3.

Re: UT2K4 baby!

for a little over the price of a dual cpu upgrade for my quicksilver, i can just build a cheap ut2k4 machine.

i basically have all the parts in my cart at newegg, and will be watching the prices fall until the day of release.

Antec Solution Series Case with 350W Power Supply,Model:SLK3700AMB,Retail
LITE-ON BLACK 16X DVD ROM Drive, Model XJ-HD166/XJ-HD 165H, OEM
Antec All Clear 120mm SmartCool Thermally Controlled Case fan,Model:75012.
Hitachi 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model HDS722580VLAT20, OEM Drive Only
Pair of Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM
Intel 865PE Chipset Motherboard for Intel Socket 478 CPU, Model "BOXD865PERLL" -RETAIL
Intel Pentium 4/ 2.8C GHz 800MHz FSB, 512K Cache, Hyper Threading Technology - Retail
Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS PCI Sound Card -RETAIL
ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -RETAIL

all for 1,012.99, i figure by the time UT2k4 is out it will be sub 1G and therefore much tastier. I've played ut2k3 on my brother's machine which is  almost the same setup (better). Playing in Oh smurf mode without a hiccup is beautiful, and i hope i can do the same with 2k4. My Quicksilver will not see another update, it will just probably be replaced with a G5 after the summer.

Maybe this will help:
http://www.macnn.com/news/22839
The new Radeon 9800 Pro with 256 MBs VRAM (DO NOT look at the price!). I guess I'll wait 'til these puppies are BTO before I gets me G5.

It was nice running into ya on the BBR server last night, Wang. GGs. That last map was frame soup for me. Good luck with your super rig. I saw Hot Carl there for a while too.

i got ritualisticly owned on the first map i jumped into on that server.

But that second map was actually kind of fun. i got some very timely headshots with the light-snipe to allow our team to win.

Re: UT2K4 baby!

Woot, wife is going to Bunco...

More gaming tonight! Just hard to pick which one...Halo, UT2K3 or DnD Heros on Xbox.

Had a great game last night too. Jumped on when Blue was down by 5 caps (3-8). I click in and joined the Red team. Well thats not right so I switched teams. A couple others joined in for a nice 6v6 in Citadel and next thing I knew we were in OT (8-8)!. Yeah baby we stopped'em cold! So OT starts and both flags are gone. Who ever can get it returned first will win. I and another guy have the FC's back, the other 3 will have to go for the return. Next thing I see is that there are 5 Blues in the base!?! Ummm Hello? So I take off, catch up to may teammate. Covered his ass, he got the flag back, we win! Nice tight game.

Re: UT2K4 baby!

Yep, Wang you was owned on that first one (I'm always owned), but you quickly started takin' care of bidness on the next one.

I also got to help turn a team around that night. Rizzo kept screamin' about teams, so I warned him this wasn't going to help him, and switched anyway and we changed a shut out to a down-by-one at the end. That is fun.
