Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)

I've got an 800mHz G3 iBook and a monitor I know works on the iBook. Is there any way to set this monitor up as a dual monitor so it shows more screen real estate instead of just repeating what's on the iBook's screen?

Barring this... I've also got a 800 G4 desktop. Same deal. Can I do the dual monitor thing on it?

As you can see, I'm desperate for dual monitors on something!

Re: Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)

I'm making this a sticky because it keeps coming up.

Anyway, the following iBooks can be hacked to support desktop spanning:

- 600 MHz versions with a Radeon GPU (16 MB VRAM)
- Any iBook G3 700/800/900
- Any iBook G4

Let us not forget that it can possibly be considered to void your warranty   shrug

You need to go to the display icon in system prefs. Select arrange button. You can now arrange the second display to be an extension of your desktop on left, right, top or bottom. You can even drag the menu bar to the second display and make it your main desktop.

And it works splendidly for me and my 12 inch iBook G4 1.2 GHz. I'm running an external 17 inch CRT at 1280x1024.

Re: Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)

I recently ordered a 12" powerbook. It will be the first Apple computer I have ever owned. I bought one because a few close family members couldn't stop raving about them whenever computers became the topic of conversation.

Neat huh?

Anywho, will I be able to use the dual monitor function right away, vice having to download something to make it work? The only  thing I know about hooking up an external monitor to my soon to be here computer is that I need a mini-dvi to vga converter, which is on it's way with the powerbook.

Thanks in advance.

I came, I saw, I came some more.

You'll be just fine with monitor spanning on a 12" Powerbook. I do it all the time. If it doesn't show up initally (if mirroring starts up when you plug in the monitor) go to System Preferences -> Displays -> When  it's plugged in, uncheck the Mirror Displays box if I remember right. I have the monitor preferences in my menubar so you can do it from there too.

And congrats on the Powerbook.  up

For the desktop, you need it to have a TwinView nVidia card or newer ATi Card. Older desktops have 2 plugs (1 ADC or DVI, 1 VGA) but you can only use one at a time. Unless it's a TwinView.

I just recently ran into this hack.  Besides possibly voiding the warranty, what are the downsides to using it.  If it's not a big deal then why is it not an option within the prefs?

None that I know of.

Because Apple make more money on PowerBooks than they do on iBooks.

Re: Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)

I was just going to post exactly the same question with the dual monitor deal, i guess this just saved me the problem...I'll download that hack now, but one thing. JamesBondsv, you said you're running a display at 1280x1024, is there anyway to crank up an ibook display to that on your default screen, not another monitor?

I recently bought a new monitor. I bought the Dell 2001FP and the iBook can run it at the monitor's native resolution of 1600x1200. The video card inside the iBook, I believe, can go up to 2048x whatever proportion it is. I found this information on ATI's website.

No. an LCD can't display higher than its native resolution, which in the iBook's case is 1024x768.

Re: Dual Monitors on an iBook!? (or a G4...)

People have said several times that using the hack "may void your warrantee."  Can someone clarify?  If I use this hack can I delete it if I need to use the warrantee, and no one at apple will be the wiser?

Hi,

Using a 14" iBook with my 19" LCD monitor - can I turn off the iBook's screen?

Thanks,

Sort of, but not quite. Enable spanning, make the 19" display your primary, and then turn down the brightness all the way on the iBook. This will mostly "disable" it but it's still possible for windows to pop up over there.

I have a 20" widescreen that I use with my 12" iBook. What I do is use the 20" as the primary display and use the iBook's display for my email and IM clients. Thus making those two apps always visible, even when watching a movie or doing something else on my main display.
