Re: HP iPod
Damn! I just read this! WTF?
I guess this a good thing for Apple. I wonder what difference there will be between an HP and an Apple iPod? Just the logo? Or will the HP model be crippled in some way? And most importantly, will it be cheaper?
All in all, it does help in the DRM battle between WMA and AAC. The more AAC compatible devices out there, the better.

!!!
An HP-branded iPod??? That's... unsettling.
At least it's not a DellPod...

Re: HP iPod
But what does Apple get out of it? Ok, it promotes the iTMS to HP buyers, but the iTMS is less a direct moneymaker itself for Apple than a way to sell iPods, where the real profit lies. I presume Apple will be getting some cut of the HP iPod sales, but surely less than it would make from its own, Apple-branded iPods... right? If that's the case, then why? Perhaps they think having HP help push them to its customers will help them sell more than they would sell Apple-branded 'Pods to them on their own, so perhaps the idea for Apple is to make up in greater volumes what it wouldn't make in margins. That sounds so counter to everything Apple's all about
, but hey, I guess it could work (and I presume HP would be responsible for tech support on these?)...

Re: HP iPod
Maybe its a matter of it will get some attention for Apple. And not "Apple is sux" type of attention.
But im not a businessman, thats just my guess.

Re: HP iPod
Apple gets exposure.
Their iTunes music store (while not a money maker in itself) also provides exposure. It works seamlessly with iPods? Maybe people will go for those when they're in the market for a player. Maybe they like it so much that they try a Mac later down the line.
It's insidious. In a good way.

I wish I had an easy reference desktop icon that would link me to the iTMS.

Re: HP iPod
But what does Apple get out of it?
If I'm thinking correctly, I am assuming this:
- Apple will make the iPod and just put the HP logo on it. (kind of like when Mitsubishi made cars for GM and put the "Eagle Talon" logo on it.)
- HP will provide the tech support.
- HP gets a decent margin off of the sales.

God, I hope not. This just looks like iTunes is now bundled software on all HPs.

Re: HP iPod
HP computers are sold in every office max, office depot, staples, circuit city, and best buy in the country. All places that offer zero apple products (okay, best buy has a selection of iPods on the bottom shelf in the MP3 player aisle). This exposure is much needed and every sale helps keep the iTunes music store open, if nothing else.
I would also guess that the "hPod" will only come in certain sizes. 10GB perhaps? If you want large capacity or the flashy new mini, you'll have to go to apple and get one there.

When this happens, Apple will have its foot in the door of "all the other digital music players" and not just iPods, which have a segregated user base. I haven't met a PC user with an iPod yet(that doesn't own a mac).

Re: HP iPod
Ok... so:
Will the HP iPod work with Macs, or be tweaked to just work with PCs? HP does sell-Mac compatible printers, after all, so they might offer other Mac peripherals. The thing is, it's easier to find discounts on a lot of stuff from other companies, like HP, than from Apple, and I'm wondering whether the HP iPod might wind up being fairly easy to obtain significantly below list price. Will they have the same pricing to begin with, for that matter?
The real questions: how many here would buy HP iPods for use with their Macs??
If you wouldn't at full price, what if you could get a significant discount??
Personally, I guess I'm too much a Kool-Aid drinking fanatic; I want an Apple logo on mine, dammit. Of course, I'll also be saving for mine for a while...

Re: HP iPod
Some reasons this is VERY good for Apple:
1. iTunes on every HP. Many more people are going to be using iTunes, and therefore purchasing songs from the iTMS.
2. With the HP branded iPod, Apple will most likely be making at least SOME money on every unit HP sells.
3. Apple doesn't have to market the hPod.
4. HP WILL market the hPod.
As already mentioned, three things still loom over this situation:
1. Will the hPod be Mac Compatible?
2. Will there be more than one model hPod? (10GB, 20GB?)
3. Will the price point of the hPod be competitive to the comparable iPod?
This last one is important. If HP's hPod is priced well under the iPod, people will purchase that instead. While Apple will still make money off this, they will presumably make more selling the true iPod as opposed to the hPod.

Umm the Eagle Talon isn't a GM product. It is a Chrysler product and I am not sure that Mitsubishi made the car. I believe it was a joint venture in which Chrysler and Mitsubishi worked together to design the car then build the engines in 1 location and the bodies in another.
Sort of like the Toyota Matrix and the Pontiac Vibe.
None the less and HP branded Apple is just weird.

Re: HP iPod
Of course the HP will work with Macs. The software and everything will be the same as the iPod.
That's what they mean by " based on the iPod ". But then again, who knows.

Re: HP iPod
Seriously, every other person at any given college totes around an iPod. It's crazy.
Dell had some intelligence briefly, they sold the iPod through their store but then they had to go get greedy and beg Creative to make them something. Losers, I hope HP kicks their ass in sales for this.
