The *up arrow* is the symbol for the shift key.

Re: Dumbass Question

Apple + Shift + N

or right click and select "new folder"

or if you don't have a two button mouse, control click = right click.

You could always open the Terminal and use the mkdir command to create a new folder.

The actual up arrow is solid black. Shift is outlined and fatter.

Re: Dumbass Question

If you mean: why is an arrow pointing up a sysbol for the shift key?, it goes back to the days of typewriters, especially the manual variety. I know I am dating myself here and possibly a number of you have no idea of what I am talking about.

The shift key on a manual typewriter operated by physically lifting the carriage up, so that a different portion of the key struck the paper, thus producing the capitol letters and symbols on the upper parts of the keys. Some electric typewriters operated in this manner too. However, the IBM typewriter had a ball with the different characters distributed all over it. A shift-key combination merely dirrected the ball to pivot to the appropriate character. Some other electric typewriters used a daisy wheel in a similar manner.

BTW, the symbol that looks sort of like this:
_ _
\_

is for the option key.

Actually, if I recall, pressing the shift key actually lowered the carriage so that you were using the top of the key instead of the bottom. My guess is that the up-arrow referred to the fact that you were using the top part of the key.

Re: Dumbass Question

Why do they use the up arrow instead of typing out the word shift? I see here on my Win NT work machine they type the words Ctrl and Shift. Ya, I know it only takes a freakin second to learn that up arrow means shift but it takes time to find that out. It's not in the instruction manual so where are you supposed to learn it?

Re: Dumbass Question

In a Finder winder you can add a 'new folder' icon in your Toolbar and it will be there  in all your windows. Just Shift-click the little pill shaped button at the top right of ypur window's title bar. Use the same manoeuver to get your window contents back.

It' begining to and back again.

Yeah. And if they spelled out the word "like in Windows" you'd be crabbing that Apple users are so dumb they have to spell out the function for us.

Close, but actually it is a combination of both. The carriage did lift up but the upper case and symbols were on the lower part so that when the shift key lifted it up the lower part would strike the paper.

Anyone who uses a Palm or a Texas Instruments caculator would be very familiar with the up arrow whenever shift is executed on these machines the up arrow shows up on the top of the screen to let you know that you are pressing shift or that shift is locked.

Well, Simpsons as well as plenty of other places. The any key joke isn't very original, but yes I do like the Simpsons.

Well you can't satisfy everyone all the time. I just think it would be easier if it was written out since I went through a time when I used the mouse when I could have used the shift key. Would have saved me some time. Also my wife's Vaio actually labels the port in English rather than using hiroglyphics like a radioactive symbol for a firewire port.

Re: Dumbass Question

The outlined up arrow is shift.

The arrow with the dotted "line" coming out of the head of it is the up arrow.

And the FireWire logo is not a radioactive symbol.  It is the FireWire logo.  To see a radioactive symbol, find Disk Burner on your HD or click "burn cd" in itunes.  It's similar, but distinctly different.
