New EarBuds seem kinda week.

I just got my new In Ear EarPhones from apple, and they seem to be a little week...the sound is better for higher sounds, but the bass makes them really peek and sound nasty, even worse then the regular Apple EarBuds. Most sounds sound better, but tne deeper sounds seem to be worse. They feel way more comfortable though.

I wonder how they compare to my Sony DXR-71 or whatever the model number is.

Been considering these for running's sake... I may stick with the current earbuds.

Can we start a poll, who has them, and do they, indeed stink as claimed? (Compared to, say the normal iPod earbuds)

I don't use the regular ones that shipped with my iPod. I use my Sony Fontopia (or something like this finishing by topia). I have always been satisfied of Sony headphones.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

Try adjusting the bass boost/EQ settings.  I've found that even with the old style earbuds, the sound can be distorted when the bass is set too high.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

i got my in ear headphones yesterday, and at first i thought thy were horrible.
but after i switched the little rubber earbuds to the smaller size, they fit better and sounded a 100 times better.

i read this post at www.ipodlounge.com that explained it better than i can.

Just to "amplify" an important point (no pun intended), as vonbonbon discovered by reading the sticky, when using in-canal phones, the quality of the seal you achieve makes a tremendous difference in what you hear. When people report that the phones sound "tinny," this is almost certainly because they have a poor fit. This is very apparent even in high-end phones such as the Ety ER-4P, where proper sealing of the ear canal makes a night-to-day difference. I wouldn't expect to achieve as complete a seal with Apple or Sony earbuds as with the triple-flanged silicone or foam earbuds that come with the Etys, but the better the seal you can achieve, the better the sound you'll hear.

That just sounds kinda icky. A "seal" in your ear? Sealed with what? That's right, ear wax.

No, I think he's talking about the fact that it took a WEEK for them to get here even with second day air service you see.  wink

Serious tho, set your EQ to something other than bass boost, cuz I bet thats where you've got it.  Honestly I've never liked the EQ on the iPod, as I found quickly that it made things peak way too often.

And if they do stink, of what do the reek? Choices should include Cheez-Whiz, cat-whiz, diesel fuel, Ben-Gay, horses, vinyl chloride, wet dogs, stale beer, rotting meat, and so forth.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

Ok, they have sharper sound for most things, but the bass just pure sucks. They are way more comfortable then my old ones, so now I'm torn between using the more comfortable ones, or using my ones that came with my 15Gb iPod and have overall better sound...but make my ears hurt like 10 times faster.

All I can say its a good thing that I didnt buy these....if I had I think id take them back. but someone else did

Oh and nox, I like having a smaller iPod, see the 40GB one is really fat, and stuff. And I don't even use half of my iPods capacity, in fact I don't use half of a mini iPods capacity, so the size and HD size works fine for me.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

I have a set of Koss earbuds that fit in the ear and their okay, I imagine that the mac phones are very similar in quality.  But the E2C earbuds they sell through skymall are really great though a tad expensive.  My father bought a pair and I may pick some up when I finnally pickup my ipod.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

You must be using them wrong. The bass response is supposed to be better because of the in-ear design. The same reason why the bass gets louder when you push the regular earbuds closer to your ear canal.

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

Most sounds sound better, but the deeper sounds seem to be worse.

You can try to 'break in' your earbuds.

Hook them up to your stereo. Tune in an FM radio station and crank the volume up fairly loud. Leave the earbuds for several hours (24 if you have the time.)

They should sound a lot better than they do now.

Nope, I don't play that game anymore either...

Re: New EarBuds seem kinda week.

again, from iPodlounge.com

A question that comes up quite often with regards to the isolation/earplug style of earphone is a "tinny" sound or lack of bass.

In a lot of cases this problem is down to the actual way you wear this type of 'phone. Isolation earphones create an acoustic seal inside your actual ear canal, so the sound from your earphones stays in your ear while outside noise can't get in.

An acoustic seal is the target of all isolation earphones. When an acoustic seal is achieved, sound projected into your ears by earbuds cannot escape and is channeled directly toward your eardrums, while disturbing external noise has no way of getting in. Acoustic seals are air-tight, so when you've got it right, you can feel the difference: pulling gently on an acoustically-sealed earbud will create a gentle tugging sensation inside your ear canal.

There is a knack to getting the earplug inserted deep enough in the ear canal to achieve a good seal.

As with noise suppression earplugs, you have to open up the ear canal by pulling upwards and outwards on the fleshy outer part of your ear (the Scapha).
The easiest way is to reach over the top of your head with your opposite hand, gripping your outer ear just above the mid-point, and pull upwards and outwards while inserting the earplug into your ear.

With the likes of the Sony EX70/71 range of 'phones I have found you can also insert the 'phone loosely into your ear canal and then, with the hand on the same side, pull out on your outer ear using the thumb and index finger while pushing the earphone in with the middle finger. This method is slightly less attention getting when in public, and less likely to elbow people in the immediate vicinity in the face!
