I've actually been moving to this frame of mind more and more lately. I often feel like a jerk when I hear my cell phone ringer stat going off. There are times when I think having a ringer is necessary, like when the phone is not in direct contact with my body. However, I've been trying to use the vibrate only mode as much as I can...
I'm a dog, spelled backwards.

Re: What Ringtone do you use?
the current cacophony of competing ring tones is one of the banes of my daily existence.
If people's ring tones set you off, I'd say you need to free up some time in your schedule and do some yoga or something. I mean, people who talk on the phone while driving piss me off, mainly because many of them can't even drive when they're not on the phone.
I found the ring tone that went off during the last movie I went to particularly annoying. I also find them annoying during meetings, at lectures, concerts, and any sort of theatre. I also find them annoying on airplanes and in hospitals when people have been specifically notified not to use their cell phones.
I don't think my going to yoga will remedy the situation.

That's different. Then it's not the ring tone itself, it's the lack of social etiquette on the behalf of the offender. To me, if someone wants their phone to play music, that's their business. But yes, it is rather annoying to hear them in inappropriate situations.

Agreed - I always set it to vibrate or turn it of for a movie or class.

Funny, but that's what everyone seems to say. I have yet to find one person who says, "Yep, my phone always goes off at the movies and during class."
Maybe I am just imagining them going off.
It is not just a social etiquette thing that pisses me off. It is also the fact that while being rude, at the same time, they are futilely trying to make their breach of etiquette more entertaining and pleasurable through the use of a ring tone.
I view the ring tone itself as a second slap in my face.

Re: What Ringtone do you use?
gotta agree with zdecker on most of this stuff; to explain my personal issues with cellular phones somewhat more completely -
i'm a retail manager in the auto repair business. my shop is physically connected to the mall, so i get all the @#$! mallrats and banger wannabes wandering through my place of business. unfortunately, the custom wheel display (for security, mainly) is directly behind the sales counter. all the wannabe blingers have to stop and drool, while their phones ring constantly. therefore, while trying to explain to Mrs. Smith precisely why she needs new brakes, i've got these yutzes with constantly ringing phones as their "posse" tries to find out where they are so they can all go out and score some pizza (or whatever). argh.
if you had to listen to the competing polyphonic ringtone top 40 all day you'd be cranky too.

Re: What Ringtone do you use?
I'd like to add that, why do people need to be entertained when they're receiving a call? Musical rings are just weird.
To quote a comedian:
I don't think Beethoven envisioned people reacting to his music with "Damn! it's my mom!"
Before I had a vibrating phone, my ringtone would be the discreet:
beep-beep......beep-beep...........beep-beep

i've heard of people doing this and it becoming a nightmare as far as increased wireless time reflecting heavily on their bills... does not having a landline (eliminating that cost) just balance it out?... i'm interested so that when i eventually move out of the dorms i can decide whether or not to get a landline phone...
suck it, trebek.

Just on principle, I don't have a cell phone and neither does my wife. People always give us real funny looks when they find that out.

Yep, I get the picture.
Shopping for the items you mention has gone from being a chore, to a hobby, to a lifestyle now for Americans.
People are encouraged to define their uniqueness in terms of "style," which for most people comes down to a matter of which mass-produced goods they are going to purchase or the noise that their phone makes when it rings.
People are just trying to convince themselves that they're not ugly and they're not boring and they're not completely ordinary even though they know they are.
And yes, I recognize the enormous irony of this post.

From here? Not quite. Would that be anything like the look I give people when they swerve into my lane 'cause they're too busy dialing or chatting to drive their smurfing car?
Keep on trendin'.

Not only that but all your calls are out there for a select number of criminals who have the equipment to listen in to your phone calls.

A lot of non-criminals have this "equipment" too. The equipment itself is legal. My (slightly modified) HT can pick up wideband signals, including people's cell phones.
I haven't listened to them though. --Judging by what I overhear people talking about on their cell phones at stores and such, there are surely more interesting conversations to be found elsewhere anyhow.

I don't know yet, but the base price was less for two phones than the landline was (and we didn't have long distance). We don't use the phone much (the phone can go for 3-4 days without ringing) so this made sense for us. (Well, that and the fact that they shut our service off for a week because they lost my payment . . . if I get our landline back it won't be from Centurytel).
Hopefully this will work. We've got 1600 regular/3000 weekend minutes, which is more than we will likely ever use.
