Not enough disk space
(I posted this question once before here, and received an extremely helpful answer. But the archive no longer extends back that far, and the problem has appeared again).
I have an IBM ThinkPad with 2gigs on the C drive and 7 gigs on the D drive. My C drive is almost full. Whenever I can, I install new software on the D drive, but some stuff insists on going to the C drive and then tells me there's no room. The Java runtime environment, for example. (I know, I should just install OS X on my Mac, but assume that's not a useful option just yet). Last time I was directed to several obscure file caches and folders and told I could safely delete them and sure enough, it freed up enough space to allow me to proceed. Can anyone advise me?

Without knowing which OS you're using, I would empty a couple of folders on C drive; the 'temp' folder in the 'windows' folder, and the 'Temporary Internet Files' folder. If you don't know where they are, use the 'Find' function, or 'search' function to locate them.
You can also right click on the hard drive icon and select "properties' and then click on the 'Disk cleanup' button. This is something that you can do fairly frequently, but it doesn't get everything.
I would then go into 'internet Explorer' (assuming you use it) and go into 'tools>internet options' and go into the 'settings' for 'Temporary Internet Files' as set that to some small number (I set mine to 2MB). Here you can also clear the history and Temporary Internet Files folder. You could designate the temp folder to drive 'D' if you wanted to as well.
If you use Netscape, or Opera or Mozilla, find their caches and empty them as well.
I would then go into the settings for 'page file' or 'swap file' (depending on your OS) and move that to 'D' drive.
You can move apps to 'D' drive after they are installed. Just paste them over and when you launch them, Windows will either try to find them, or you can intervene and use the 'Browse' function and tell Windows where they have moved to.
You can go into the 'Find Files or Folders' or 'Search' function and do a search on C drive for '*.tmp' files and delet any you find.
It's not a movie.
