Re: MS Windows minus WMP
Big deal. You can not use WMP and be fine.
Now, if they could successfully enforce MS to ship windows minus Interweb Explorer... that would be something...
I got a virus through an IE exploit, and I use FireFox exclusively except Windows updates!!
-Timsame here I did not run IE for like a 6 months cant relly complain about dows really same instal regular maintence firewall NU adaware (great free piece of soft really recomend it) and no worries for 2 years now on a original xp no sp pack installed. I like my new Imac better though
Ummm, what
All posts on the internet are postfixed by an invisible "IMHO". It's not in the html code, either.

Re: MS Windows minus WMP

WMP dosen't play DivX natively. It will only play it if there is a DivX codec installed on the machine.
QuickTime on the PC on the other hand won't see 3rd party codecs to save its life. If it can't find it on the Apple server it just returns an error message. Truly useless unless you are watching mpeg4 (apple is the only one conforming to the standard it seems) or .mov files.
My solution for Windows playback of any kind of video -
Install QuickTime for mpeg4 and .mov
Install Nimo Codec Pak 5 Beta 9 build 1
Install Nic's XVid Codec
Install FFDShow 2003 or newer build
Install WinAmp 5
You can literally watch anything via WinAmp with this setup and for the occasional mpeg4 file that winamp can't handle due to smurf 3rd party codecs QuickTime will usually always play it.
The Real Player will also handle about anything after setting up the above software but I try to avoid that POS.

I've succesfully installed third party quicktime plugins on the PC - I haven't tried a divx plugin (might not exist??) but I have installed the ogg vorbis plugin.
But my solution to video is to use Linux and GStreamer totem.
If that can't handle it, then it isn't worth viewing
It handles divx/xvid/most mpeg/mpeg4 (though sometimes no audio on mpeg4)/some .mov (mpeg4??)/*some* .wmv (though not much)
I could install mplayer with the various win32 DLL's but I don't see a need to, I really don't.
It's not hard to quit smoking. I do it 20 times a day.

I mean just general use codecs that install in to windows. QuickTime will not see them but most other media players do.

A friend of mine uses the same solution. He is very happy with it.
