Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Is this possible? I want to play some network games, and I'm not really up for shelling out another $100 AU to do so. Normally it's possible to eject the CD during games, thus providing a nifty way to play multiplayer: You fire up, take out the CD, the next guy fires up with it. However, the UT2K4 CD seems unwilling to eject during gameplay. It does the same on both machines, so it's just not my iBook playing up.

Is there any way around this?

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

For the Mac side, 'fraid not. Epic did away with the CD check on the first or second patch for the PCers. Nothing legal so far for the Mac folks.

I'm sure there are ways, MOF I KNOW there are ways, but forum rules forbid that kind of discussion. The answer is out there...

It rules to have a Peecee!

I'd just beg for them to remove the CD check i guess.  They did away with the CD check on the mac for UT99, figures they forgot about the mac tongue

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Well, the only way I know could work is...

-Install UT2k4 in one computer
-Install all the updates and mods and crap in one comp...if you want.
-Install the game on a second computer.
-DON'T PATCH IT

Was there a point to use a list for such simple instructions? No, but I just felt like it.

OK, the bad part is that the second game will not be patched, will not be able to play things like Air Buccaneers or Fair Ops, and all that sort of stuff. The good part? Well, the first version of UT2k4 does allow you to take the DVD out while the game is running. So run the unpatched version first, and then run the patched one.

Oh, yeah, as far as I know, no-CDs are not considered legal, at least not the way you want to use it. You may find help at some macintosh underground forums, so try there.

Ok, thanks for the help.

I tried doing disk images, though I couldn't really get my head around it. Could someone explain what I've got to do for me?

Thanks.

How in the heck did you get such a small disk image? My image of my DVD is almost 4 GB!

It's called a pacifier.  It worked for UT99 till they released 436, but Levi is right, this type of discussion is forbidden...

Discussion forbidden?  Pleease!  MacAddict even had an article on this!  But, unfortunately, I lost the September 2004 issue.

Play Games without the CD or DVD

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

I used Toast to make a disk image that I mount when I play UT2K4. As I recall I could not get Apple's image software to make an acceptable image.

That is why its a fake CD image, it fools the game into thinking its a full cd.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Disk Copy, you make a new image with the same name as the disk and mount that image.

Didn't work for Halo.  (using the built in one in Mac OS X).

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Since this is indeed covered in an old issue of MacAddict, I'll allow this discussion and even contribute to it.  To make a usable disk image, one must have Roxio's Toast version 5 or 6.  Select the 'other' option in Toast menu along the top of the window.  The main white window should change and be titled 'Disc Image'.  Drag and drop the UT or Halo DVD to this window.  Click on 'record'.  Wait ten minutes or so while the image is created.  It will have a .toast suffix.  Once that's done, double click on the image.  A new toast window will pop up showing 'Disc Image' and the Halo or UT image.  Click on 'mount'.  The image will pop up as a UT or Halo DVD.  Fire up Halo or UT and enjoy the game without the DVD.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Though the UT2K4.toast image works fine for me I could never get the Halo.toast image to work. I believe it is because Halo actually checks for the physical presence of a disk in the drive. Burning the Halo image does work. This allows the original to be put away for the inevitable re-install someday.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Just to clear up a few things..

First off I didn't make this disc image, I found it on google search because I was getting annoyed with the DVD.

Second: This disc image is weird, it has 2 discs on one image and only toast mounts it correctly.

One disc is labed "Unreal Tournament 2004 for MacOS X" and has the icon of the actual DVD. All that is in this disc are 2 items, an installer package for the game that is empty, and a readme with the following:

This wonderful no CD image by ZildjianKX.  Mount with Roxio Toast and enjoy.

This disc image is by no means meant to be used to pirate the game.  It is meant so that you don't have to keep putting the damn DVD in the drive to play it each time, or so you don't have to make a 4 gig disc image to mount each time you want to play.  I really wish developers would stop using DVD/CD checks, especially when the game already takes up 5.2 gigs on your hard drive and requires a legitimate CD-key to play it online.

I would also like to give a big smurf you to the people who have been going to the stores and ripping the CD-keys out of the box to play it online (like some of the smurfs on macserialjunkie).  People like you just smurf up the scene.

This is a great game, so please go out and buy it if you haven't already.

-ZildjianKX

Greetz to iggy

The second disc that loads off the image is called "Unreal Tournamen" and has the dummy installer program, a few bin files that are normally invisible on the 2k4 dvd.

I can eject the first cd after mounting and keep "Unreal Tournamen" mounted, as it has the files on it the game checks for.

I hope this clears anything up...and if anyone wants I can put this file up my hosting because I have no clue where I originally got it.

And a side note, it is only 1.3mb, not 2. My bad.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Uh, no.  Make your own disk image with Toast.  Talk of downloading one can't be construed as anything but piracy. Please avoid that topic in this thread please.

My Halo disk image worked OK for me, Doc.  I dunno what I may have done differently than you.  I'm using Toast 5.2.1.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

Yeah, I don't have dig out my DVD every time I want to play or waste 4G of space on my HD. Granted, I've got about 35G free right now, but I do work with some large Photoshop files and video files so every bit of free space on my HD helps.

The DVD/CD is only accessed when the game first boots for the copy protection. The primary advantage of an image is not having to find and mount the DVD/CD every time you start the game (I wrote an Apple Script that mounts the DVD image then starts UT2K4). Also it protects your DVD/CD from the risks of repeated handeling.

Re: Playing UT2004 without the disc inserted

You need two unique cd-keys to play together, last time I checked, so bypassing the cd check isn't going to help.
