Re: Post your pet's pic

I've never been able to get a good picture of our cat because she is so frightened of the camera. However, this may soon change. Tommorow I will finally get the newer digital camera I asked for for Christmas, a Canon Powershot A75. This will be the first time I've ever had a camera with actual zoom (previous cameras were a Polaroid, cheap disposeables, and two digital cameras that only had digital zoom which doesn't count).

I recently got a tripod and she was scared of it before I even attached a camera to it, but I've since taken an idea from professionals (not just photographers) who deal with animals. To get really close to an animal, professionals utilize great patience by getting near the animal and remaining very still for a very long time so the animal begins to become accustomed to their presence. What I've done is set up my adjustable tripod (24" to 61") in the living room (where she is much of the time) and just left it there for a few days. I started at the smallest size and made it one size bigger each day. By the second day she had already started walking under it which is a good sign. Today it is now at it's full size but my camera hasn't yet arrived. I will continue leaving it out there and in a few days I will attempt to take a picture; the camera will have been mounted in the tripod at least a day before I make the attempt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wow, sounds like you have a very fearful cat, and a lot of patience to get a good picture.

Good luck up

And, couldn't you try getting a pic from outside of a window perhaps?

Nice idea, but we have burglar bars on the window near the living room, and a couch that would likely get in the way (between the window and the part of the room she'd probably be. I will also be turning off the camera's sound and the AF beam before attaching it to the tripod. My biggest fear is that the sound of the motorized optical zoom may scare her off after several days of preparation. I'm not sure how loud or quiet it will be since I've never used a camera with optical zoom before.

Re: Post your pet's pic

They must have huge pupils. I've heard the red eye problem with people also has to do with pupil size, so maybe dogs have huge ones. By the way, the person that told me about the red eye thing and pupils has a wife that has normally large pupils and looks like the devil in most pictures.

Red eye is created by the flash lighting up the interior of the eye through the pupil, so the amount of red eye is based on pupil size.  The best way to prevent red eye is not use a flash.  You could also diffuse the light from the flash or bounce the light rather than having it flash directly onto the subject to limit the effect of red eye (it'll also soften the background shadows).

Re: Post your pet's pic

I think some animals are also prone to weird eye problems for the same reason that they are able to see in the dark better than humans.  Like when you see a cat's eyes at just the right angle in the shadows they reflect a ton of light.  Same idea.  I could be totally off base about that, it wouldn't be the first time.

I would post a pic of my dog Morgan, but I left my damn USB cable at school.

Re: Post your pet's pic

Well, I got my Powershot A75 yesterday and I must say, it rocks! I don't have any pictures worth sharing yet (so far the pics I've taken with it were just test pictures with stupid subject matter), but I already can appreciate the relatively (compared to my A200) high level of detail it captures.  I really, really like having optical zoom. The various scene modes are very nice, and I love how stich assist overlays half of the previous picture when taking multiple shots to later be combined into a panorama. The TV/projector mode was also very nice. With my 2500mAh rechargeable batteries, battery life is excellent. Just about the only thing I don't like about this camera is the inconvenient placement of the tripod hole and the opening battery compartment; they're right next to each other, meaning that everytime I need to take the batteries out I have to unscrew the tripod mount. While it may not be the best camera in the world, I'm not working for the National Geographic. For my uses, this camera fits me like a glove and I am one very, very happy camper. up

PS- There are still a few more days left before I make an attempt to photograph my cat.  The camera is now on the tripod so she can hopefully start getting used to its presence.

This is my French Braird, his name is Clifford, and he turned 6 this month.  We adopted him from a rescue shelter located in AZ (we're in NJ, btw).  There website is here.  He is very playfull and loves lots of attention.  Briards are very good family dogs, and are great with kids.

Re: Post your pet's pic

When I attempted to photgraph our cat last year, there was no planning/preparation involved, I had no tripod, my camera -a PowerShot A200- was rather limited (digital zoom only), and perhaps most importantly I lacked knowledge of the basics of photography. The result was pretty bad.

This time around, I had a tripod and a far better camera. I had to wait a while after Christmas for my camera to arrive, but the good part of this is that unlike with my previous cameras I actually downloaded the manual and did several days worth of extensive reading of other information I found online. While waiting for the camera I learned about the basics of photography, the basics of digital photography, and the specifics of the camera I had yet to receive. Fortunately, my older PowerShot was similar enough in interface for me to practice what I read. Around the same time I came up with a basic plan on how to get my cat to not be so frightened of the camera. Upon receiving the camera I played around with it for a while, taking test shots of random subject matter. I continued caring out my plan to get Ashley used to the equipment and using Google found various pages with tips on photographing a pet.

Today, I put my plan into action. I was very surprised at how much she had changed in just a few days- rathering than running from the camera she actually walked right up to it and started playing with the wrist strap. Though the lighting was poor she handled the camera very well. I was able to take quite a few photos, probably around twenty to thirty (I use Image Capture and deleted the really bad ones right of the camera before downloading all the rest). I picked the two best and made corrections to them in Photoshop. Mainly I corrected the poor lighting and made distracting objects less prominent through blurring and cropping. I really like the results...
