Napoleon Dynamite
Dumbest movie ever.
"Tell us again what you did this summer?"
"I went wolverine hunting with my uncle in Alaska."
"Did you shoot any?"
"Yeah, like 50 of 'em. They were attacking my cousin. What would you do in a situation like that?"
"What'd you shoot 'em with?"
"A freakin' 12-gauge! What do you think?"
hahaha.

I loved it. I thought it was definitely one of the best movies of 04. It was only sweeter in the sense that it cost less than $500,000 to make. Cool.

I think the movie cost around a million and a half, which is still incredibly cheap for a movie.
I loved the movie and it is one of my favorite movies of the year.

I found it more funny reflecting upon it afterwards rather than when I was viewing it. It seems like they thought they were far more clever and hilarious then they actually were. Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but usually weird comedies are right up my alley.
The amount of pimping MTV has done for it also makes the whole thing feel unclean. My heart sunk when I first saw that MTV was behind this tiny "indie" film. Something about pop-culture-giant MTV shoving this "alternative" comedy down our throats just doesn't sit right with me. But I'm just an old curmudgeon who gets pissed off at the world anytime something small and cool that I like becomes mainstream. Now get off my lawn!

Re: Napoleon Dynamite
The two review spots I usually trust - Onion AV Club and Slate - had similar reviews but opposite conclusions. Onion said it was someone trying to make a Todd Solondz/Wes Anderson movie and making a repetitive uninteresting one-joke comedy. Slate said it was someone trying to make a Todd Solondz/Wes Anderson movie and making a good movie.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Yeah, it was somewhat repetitive and one-joke, but it wasn't uninteresting. And it wasn't long enough to really tire it out. You could say it had something of an Anderson vibe (probably mostly from the style of the score) but it was quirky in a different way. I think for its intended audience, it succeeded. Clearly, it's not for everyone. I thought it was cute.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite
It was a really enjoyable, character-driven movie, right up there with and maybe surpassing "Pizza," another indie from 2004 with the theme of the gen Y misfit.
This movie was perfectly acted, always interesting. Nothing was predictable -- for example, when Pedro leaves the cake on the girl's top step, you hope the flim won't go for the cheap joke of her stepping on it. (And it doesn't.) When Napoleon draws a portrait of his crush (Trish?) you think maybe it really will be nice and impressive, but it's -- well, it's just so revealing of the quixotic Napoleon, the ideal loser, for he needs and wants no one's pity.
I especially loved Deb, the unprecious shy girl saving up for college. Everything she does to make money is so unsolemn, so serious, whether it is her "craft weaving" or photography. The directions she gives to Uncle Rico as she photographs him are hilarious. Great end touches, too, like Grandma kissing the llama with whom Napo9leon has such sibling rivalry. Be sure to watch the DVD past the credits because the end of the movie comes after them.
This is a movie I could see more than once and probably will. It will have years of showings on Comedy Central and will definitely stand the test of time beyond less successfully executed but also fine films of the same genre, American bathos, such as Gilbert Grape, Dogma, Bill and Ted, etc.
It was a good way to spend a couple of hours on New Year's Eve.

Deb was played by Tina Majorino and Trish was played by a woman who is an artist.

Worst movie ever. I want to get a petition going to have MTV pay me for watching it. It's right up there with "Johnny Mnemonic" and "Envy".

Hey now, what's wrong with Johnny Mnemonic?
