Re: Please do not pirate software...
I don't mind piracy too much, as long as everyone follows these guidelines:
1. Buy Mac games, don't pirate them. We need to boost the Mac Game industry.
2. Register shareware, don't pirate it. Shareware authors are the ones that can't afford to be raped.
3. Never, ever, EVER pay for a Microsoft product. Go on a pirating frenzy.
Exactly!!! Great guidelines
I'd like to add this:
4) If you make money by using a program, or rely on it for your business/profession, then you should pay for it.

I bought only one expensive app, Lightwave 3D, and it hurt.
Ouch! That's over 7 grand, right?

Re: Please do not pirate software...
I'm a independent contractor so I don't have a ton of income coming in right now so The way I deal with software is:
If its Shareware or Mac Games I pay for them!
M$ software (If I ever need it) I download and Uses it, I never want M$ to get one thin dime form me!
Now what I do with big name software and stuff I usually download like Photoshop, Final Cut pro, Flash, ect. Is I download Pirated copies and as soon as I have the money to actually pay for it then I go out and buy a real copy.
Now lately I have reframed from buying software like Flash and Photoshop because it seems like every year a new version comes out and I don't want to spend $300 a year to update them. Photoshop I am planing to buy very soon because it looks like Photoshop 8 is a good deal down the road.
But I had just spent $495 to update to Lightwave 7.5 ( I held off as long as I could before buying this), $1,199 for Director MX and $799 to upgrade my Cube to 1.2GHz so my bank account is a bit dry right now.
I must thank Apple big time for Final Cut Express, I'm a lot happier paying (what was it?) $300 for the software then $1000!

Re: Please do not pirate software...
But most of all, I believe that if more people actually purchased software legit; software companies will eventually drop prices.
There in lies the problem. Many students CANNOT "actually" purcahse the software. They would if they could but they just can't. I think on a student level software piracy is much more forgivable. Think about it. You get the program in college for free and use it and get used to it and then when you leave school you can afford it and probably will buy this indespinsible product. Like you said they say they would buy it if it was cheaper and also like you said it might be cheaper if they bought it for the legit price but it is at a point where they cannot buy it legit and still eat the next day so it is an endless cycle. Developers cannot afford to lower prices with so few actual buyers. Students cannot afford to pay current prices. Doh.
So long,

Re: Please do not pirate software...
I'm curious. A lot of folks admit that they would pirate Windows software, but would pay for it on the Mac. What if Windows users copied Mac software? There are a lot more Windows folks that don't like Macs than there are Mac folks that don't like Windows, or something.

Don't forget though, while Windows whores itself out to anyone anytime, alot of Mac software is just that, MAC software that is not compatible with Windows machines (Final Cut Pro 3 ofr exmaple).

How bout buy the stuff you use often, thats what I do.
4) If you make money by using a program, or rely on it for your business/profession, then you should pay for it.
Yeah, Styer's suggestion is good, as is cheesy's. I think pirating of any kind is immoral, but there are many levels of immoral
. Murder vs. stealing gum, for example. Pirating software (and I admit I've done it myself a few times, so I am probably biased), in my opinion, doesn't dip very far into the immoral. Its wrong, but not terribly so. Pirating software then making money off of it, however, I think is totally wrong, and shouldn't be done. Pirating software to get your "start" in an industry, then paying for it once you've earned some money withit, I have no problem with. I like to think of it as a "software loan."

Re: Please do not pirate software...
So if a 10,000 Win users download Final Cut Pro, even though they can't use it, it's no problem?

I don't see any problem with that. Maybe they'd all buy new macs to use their freshly pirated software.

Re: Please do not pirate software...
I cannot believe the way some of you people justify stealing. Who the hell are you determine what company has already made "enough" money, and you can now steal from them at will?
It's absolutely pathetic... no it's dispicable.
If you're going to steal software then at least have the common sense to realize that it's stealing. SoftwareCo. sells a product, and it costs the same for you, your Uncle's home business, and for Ford Motor Company. If any one of you pirates it, you're a thief. Just a thief.
All the freakin' Robin Hoods in this thread disappoint me.

But what I'm trying to say is how would it effect Apple? Downloading what would be Millions of dollars for Apple.

I don't knwo any figures, but I'm guessing Apple makes more money off the computers the sell than upgrades to the OS. If that is the case then I wouldln't really have a problem with PC users pirating Mac OS because it would mean they would have to purchase Macs to run it on

Re: Please do not pirate software...
If you are buying, say 10 licencies of Photoshop, you are still paying for THAT SAME Photoshop almost 10 times, but it have DIFFERENT, multiuser serial number! You just pay for serial number! And next: do you really think CDs cost $ 699? Well, you can say, they need those money for workers, development and so on. But why big managers have so MUCH money? Do you really think that every dollar goes to programmers? THEY programmed that software, they are working. Are they most richies men on the planet? Nope. Managers. Why? Why to bother to pay managers? They don't work.
Look, I ALWAYS will be pirating. I'm happy when I can give those money to poor children or animals, not to the most richiest men on this smurfed planet. I like to help poor, not to help rich to be richiest.
Bill Gates is most richiest man and he is not giving any money for poorest.
It's ironic that most richiest people (actors, bussinesmen and so on) have so much money they never could spend 'em and if they "want" to "help" poor they are going to do some auction or party and there they collect few hundred dollars. And they have millions of 'em.
Sorry, but this is not about money. This is about to be really moral, not to look like that 'cos I have legal software.

Re: Please do not pirate software...
Lately I've come across a swarm of people pirating not just music and movies...but SOFTWARE.
Back to the founding post. I don't belive one form of "stealing" is worse than any other. Most people download hundreds of mp3's for every software program they jack. Ever seen those illegal servers? The amount of mp3's being traded is astromical, but I belive it adds up to be about equal.
Althogh I belive theft is wrong I do not see the theft in piracy, I just don't. It's very different to steal a car, than it is to steal a picture of that same car.

Yes but most of the microsoft users I know only use Windows because they don't have any other feasible options because of games, gfx card upgrades, and pc's are so 'effing cheap. And I agree on that note to an extent. I mean it's not like they pay homage to Microsoft, they just live with windows.
If you ate crackers and water all your life you wouldn't know what your missing out on. Once you get that taste of prime rib though, you'll never go back to crackers.
