EA an acquisition target?

Firingsquad reports

The big fish in the little pond has caught the eye of Cthulhu. GI.biz reports how Rupert Murdoch is coming up from down under to 'kick the tires' of some gaming companies.

Speaking at a US investment conference, Peter Chernin admitted that News Corp was "kicking the tires of pretty much all video games companies" - up to and including market leader Electronic Arts.

"We see [games] as a big business and would like to get into it," Chernin told the conference, according to a report in today's Financial Times.

"We are struggling with the gap between companies like Electronic Arts, which come with a high price tag, and the next tier of companies," he explained. "These may be too focused on one or two product lines."

I expect the only change would be that in games like the GTAs, you'd die a horrible death at the end. Gotta send the right message.

Oh, and O'Reilly ads in-game... the horror! http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/worry.gif

A postal 2 mod where everyone was O-Relly would be awesome. Shoot them, burn them and pee on them to put out the flames....

Re: EA an acquisition target?

Actually Rupert Murdoch is a died-in-the-wool, card-carrying liberal, but if you guys want to turn this into a political thread I have a lock right here in my pocket dying to get out.

Re: EA an acquisition target?

Vivendi? Nope. According their website, EA is publically owned and traded. That's I think the whole point in this thread. A monopolization of the entertainment  industry is a scary idea.

Re: EA an acquisition target?

Ouch, I thought it was just going to be them movie from one big company to another. I would be surprised if this changed mac gaming much though since EA doesn't release many games for mac anyway.

Although, Aspyr has pretty much become the official distributor of EA products for Mac, much loke MacSoft and Microsoft seem to have an arrangement.

Agreed. Murdoch is about as progressive as George Bush.

OK, that's two votes to lock it.  Good enough for me.
