iCal 2?

This isn't a rumor question as much as a "what features would you add?" question.  Well, what would you add?

I haven't really decided yet.  I really like the interface, but I'm sure that there are a few things that could be added that I don't even know that I want yet.  Actually, if iCal was entirely contained within a Gadget... way cool.

So what would you guys put into iCal 2?

Re: iCal 2?

Better syncing online.  I want to use multiple computers to edit the same calanders, and have them update automatically.  Right now, I can only 'Subscribe' to calanders, but I cannot edit them.

Also the ability to view 'schedules' online.  Like I could publish certain calanders that display my work / school schedules so other people can see when I'm occupied.  It would need an interface that can be viewed but not necessarily subscribed to.

Also, I hate that fold out window.  I'm forced to have my monthly view smaller because a huge honking pull out window wants attention.  It could fit much nicer along the top or bottom ala Photoshop's tool pallatte options.

There's probably more, but I'm going to bed.

yeah, I second that

you mean something like PHP iCalendar?

yep, a nice inspector window or something would be cool..

- Also, the to do items should probably go in a separate window or view (selectable in a table under the calendars or something) for the same reason

- A "list" view would be a nice overview for months or even years (especially when printing)

I like these threads because you suggest something, then someone else comes along and is like 'Dude, you can already do that!'

Anyway, I third the Syncing online thing, I want my calendars on both computers!

heh, on that note... you can have the info window as an inspector instead of a side tab.  this was one instance where the screaming hoards convinced apple that the inspector window was needed.  look in the prefs i think.

I just want better organizing of all day events.  items spanning more than one day really screw up the layout with wasted space.

Re: iCal 2?

FTP syncing. Of course, this would make .Mac just a little less of a good buy, but if you could have the remote calendar editing on .Mac or WebDAV and FTP upload, that would be cool, too.

use the command line ftp client:

Code:

ftp -u ftp://user:pass@host/path /User/username/Library/Calendars/*.ics

(see man ftp)

you can put this in your /etc/crontab file to schedule it..
(see man 5 crontab)

if you care about putting your ftp password in a config file, then you shouldn't be using ftp anyway.. use scp with public key encryption

More cool colors! I want to have a different color for all 7 classes, then one for church, and one for soccer, and one for home. You can't have that without having two calendars with the same color, which is confusing sometimes and definitely not cool.

Compatability with my phone!

That's an iSync thing isn't it? When are they gonna update that, the way people get through phones almost everyone must be waiting for that to happen. Or is it just me?

Thank you!  up

Go to the Window menu and select, 'Detatch Info' and it becomes an inspector.

Or set up an FTP user with only write access to the directory on the server where it's stored.

But I'd still prefer it be done inside iCal whenever a calendar is updated, like it is with webDAV

Re: iCal 2?

How about some font options and more layout options when printing? My wife insists on a copy hanging on the fridge, but when I print the monthly calendar everything is so big it is cut off.  There's a lot of wasted space around the margins too. Like turning off the before and after months; it doesn't make the main calendar any bigger, it just leaves a lot of white space where they used to be.

Thanks for the tip, but that wastes just as much space, and is an annoying floating window.  I really think a bar across the top or bottom would be elegant and ergonomic.  But a nice tip, though.

Seconded on all counts.

Woah, I need to start using iCal again then. Last time I added a calendar there was no such option.  blush

Font options, especially smaller ones. I'd like to fit all of the text in the box.

Pop-up alarms. I'd like to wake up may Mac and find a window on top to remind me of the day's event(s).

Re: iCal 2?

Yeah, having smaller text in month view would be sweet. I want to be able to read the items without having the window huge. Would be good in week view, too, everything's always cut off.

The main actual feature I'd want to add is having a way to link to-do items and calendar items. I'd like there to be a mark on the calendar of when a to-do item is due. That way when I look at what's ahead for the week or something, I see my to-do items, too. (I tend to ignore my to-do items since they aren't scheduled, they're just there... bad habit  blush)

iCal really is a solid program, though, and I enjoy using it.

For those that don't know of it, you may want to check out Menu Calendar Clock.

Agreed completely.

There's a program called Pester that's nice for things like waiting for laundry, but something like that needs to be implemented in iCal.

This thread really does point out how little iCal offers...

Re: iCal 2?

So, even though this is a thread about what features we think iCal should get, any speculation on when this app will be released? My guess: a random day with no special event or fanfare, once they finish updating it.  wink

I really hope so.  I'll continue to use it because of its simplicity, and well, I'm already using it.  To be surprised one day by a major update would be great.

iCal is seperate from iLife, right?

Re: iCal 2?

more colors in one calendar. So that every item has a code but appears on the same calendar rather than syncs as different ones so that I can go online and just by the colors in the day, I know wether I'm in meetings, classes, office doing nothing, etc.

I'm looking forward to see where Sunbird is going because I'm getting a bit bored of iCal.

Re: iCal 2?

Here's one: Smart Calendars

It would be awesome if you could take a specific event from a calendar on the Internet and add it to a calendar on your local machine, and refresh them all at the same time.

For example: If you like to watch Iron Chef and Lost, you can find the FoodTV calendar on the 'net and select the Iron Chef event to add to your TV calendar and find the ABC schedule and get the Lost event and ad that to your TV calendar, and they both dynamically update at a set interval.

Calendars with sub-calendars would solve that problem.  Imagine a folder of "Work," broken apart into different sub-calendars for meetings, classes, office, etc.  That'd be kind of cool.
