Safari - Why didn't Apple just...

Why just have google in the toolbar? Why not have all the search engines in Sherlock? Adjust which sites you want in Preferences. Or... is there some deal between Google and Apple going on that we don't know about?

Re: Safari - Why didn't Apple just...

I don't know, but I would expect to see some level of tight integration between Sherlock and Safari in the future.  It would make sense for them to work seamlessly together, much in the way iMovie 3, iPhoto 2, and iTunes 3 do, eg. you can see and interact with your Sherlock internet searches from within Safari, or something along those lines.

You must also consider that there is no Google search in Sherlock, but it is in Safari probably because it is certainly easier to add a field in Safari's toolbar which connects to Google, performs the search, then displays the results the way Google does in a normal web page than how Sherlock and the engines it searches displays search results.  Plus, I don't think Google's engineers want to rewrite how Google performs and displays searches just so they can fit it into Sherlock's methodology and squeeze it down into a plug-in for Sherlock just to appease 5% of users.

Maybe because google is the best search page on the internet? Sherlock integration would be nice, but for anything other than what google would find, just go to the website or launch sherlock!

I don't use Sherlock at all. I think it's useless.

I agree.  Just don't see what's useful about it.  alright, I occasionally use the translation.  And the stock lookup.  But that's it.

I like the Google toolbar thingy.  It means I can, for instance, see something in a web page and just (in the words of Jobs) boom, type it right in and go.

I just hope apple didn't spend too much time coding that google search.  OmniWeb comes with the same functionality as a shortcut.

it's a simple matter of creating a url and then requesting it.

I could code that in one minute in AppleScript.  I don't see why you think Apple's far more experienced programmers would do anything else.[/i]

If you can do this, why don't you go ahead and freakin' do it instead of whining here and wanting someone else to do it for you?

Re: Safari - Why didn't Apple just...

I like having the Google search in the bar.  It is possible to do a search, then type a url in the address bar and root around (separately from the search itself) then click the SnapBack in the google bar and go directly back to the search page and still have the SnapBack in place in the address bar.

I don't believe any other browser has this functionality, although it's been a while since I used anything besides Chimera.

Here's a question: why do I have to select the "check spelling as you type" every time I fire up Safari?  That seems to be one setting I should be able to set as a permanent preference.  Or am I missing something?

I wouldn't be surprised if they add more search tools in that pane either by 1.0 or almost surely by Safari 2.

I don't use Sherlock because I still use and prefer Watson.

The only thing I really use Sherlock for now is the AppleCare feature.  Otherwise I prefer Watson for everything else.

Re: Safari - Why didn't Apple just...

well I use sherlock for the Movie times feature, thats really nifty. I just click movies and it shows me a list of movies and times for my theatre, AND has the trailer in a quicktime movies automatically load! That is really cool. The Ebay feature will also come in handy. Its nice, because you get the same funcionality as the websties, but w/o the extra ads and stuff.

I've never used Sherlock in Jaguar either, which makes it basically useless for me. But i'm sure it's a good app and is just what some people want.
