Re: What Speakers do you use or enjoy?
I've currently got a pair of Axiom M3Ti hooked up to my laptop, but as somebody in a dorm I more often use Beyer DT 770 powered by an amp I made (Pimeta).

Alesis M1 Active Mk2. About $400.00 Picture link.
I've never cared much for subwoofers. The Alesises have individual amps for each speaker (see edit below), and you can plug the ports to adjust the bass. I have one port plugged on each. I'm really pleased. They work for any kind of music.
(edit-- I meant that each unit has separate amp for woofer and tweeter, and a crossover before the amps. It beats having a crossover after the power amp. Sounds better.)

I use Logitech Z-2200 THX. They are some of the best sounding speakers I have heard for a computer to date.

I use an Aiwa minisystem and its speakers, and connect the system to my Mac with a Y-cable. It gets the job done. If you have a decent stereo already, you may want to use that for your computer sound output.

Re: What Speakers do you use or enjoy?
I had the Altec Lansing ATP-3 for a few years, until I sold them with my Dell system. Good sound for about $70.
I then bought the Creative I-Trigue 3400. I think they cost me $129. The subwoofer sucks so much I returned them.
I then bought the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system. About $150. Great sound, but hated the cheap cables/connectors for the satellites that would cause static if moved at all. Damned if I was gonna spend another $30 for the Monster Cable upgrade that Klipsch sells. Back they went.
Next (and current) is the Logitech Z-2300. $104. Sounds very good to me.
I may not be done yet.

Funny, my friend has a set that I baby sat for over the summer and i moved them about from time to time never noticing any cable issues

Tivoli Audio stereo setup plus bass speaker. It's actually an analog AM/FM tuner with one speaker in it, and a matching speaker-only identical box for stereo. Not much of a high-volume performer but the sound quality for the price is very true. Other speakers tend to have false sounding bass or thin high frequencies. Not so with these.
What he said.

iBook -> Sonica USB --> Onkyo TX-SR502 --> speakers (mix of Polk and Infinity). I may have a 12" screen, but the sound makes up for it.
And, General_K it's easy to get in the habit of assembling a speaker collection. It may be more economical in the long run to just buy a conventional stereo.

The Altec Lansing speakers my friend found at his job suit me just fine. Mmmmmm free speakers

Another vote for the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers. They're capable of an insanely high volume with no distortion. I'm not a huge audiophile, but these speakers seem to offer a much "fuller" sound then the huge sub/tiny tweeter setups that are so common. Simply awesome!
I fourth the motion on these speakers. Purely awesome

Re: What Speakers do you use or enjoy?
very awesome indeed, too bad they dont have good 5.1 promedia set.... I mean they are ok but the deal clincher on why I chose the Logitech Z-680s was the range of inputs on them that I really needed.

Re: What Speakers do you use or enjoy?
I've got the SoundSticks. They don't "go to 11" but for general music listening they're great. Look nice, too. I can crank them to full system and iTunes volume (it's all software-controlled) with no distortion. You've gotta have the bass control all the way up to get any low-end, though.

I am using the Logitech Z-640 5.1 system
Definitely not a bad system, just picked it up for 40 bucks CAD at Staples (mmm discount). My B&W doesn't support 5.1 of course so it's a 3.1 right now anyway. I am looking at getting a sound card for them.

Ya think?

Actually, I already have some nice NHT SP-2 speakers that were orphaned when I sold the last stereo system I had. All I need to hook them up to the computer is an amplifier. Hmmm...

Re: What Speakers do you use or enjoy?
I use the Harman Kardon soundsticks and iSub and they rock. I've had them for about 4 years now and have not regretted the purchase. The only thing that I wish they had was a regular audio (min-jack) interface rather than a USB interface (I just have a feeling the sound would be better). Apparently, though, the new version of those speakers does not feature the USB audio interface. So I'm sure they'd be better or at least sound a lot cleaner.
