I could give the same organization a twenty and it would hurt me just as much as it hurts him. yeah good for him but he's not giving much.

Re: Gates donates $750 million
I think Bill Gates is a great person.
He donated the biggest amount of money, in relative and absolute terms (about 40% of his wealth, about 20 Billion Dollars).
He takes from the rich and gives to the poor... :-)

Is it just a coincidence that this comes in the midst of a European Union judgement against MS?
Just like his minority scholarships came just as he was getting slammed for screwing the PermaTemps.
It's not altruism. It's another attempt to rescue his public image. He's still the world's biggest smurf.

who cares why he's doing it. the kids still get the money for things they need, like vaccine shots.

In that case, we should all keep trashing him for the jerk he is. More lawsuits against MS. More honest criticism of the predatory nature of Bill G. The world could use more of this faux altruism.

...and I have a fur-covered body. Let's keep the heat on Bill G. The richest (mean) man in the world should also be the most generous.

The Gates foundation gives away a smurfload of money - it could just be that this is one of the single largest donations made. But every year they give away boatloads of funds.
I say good for him.

Donations are good beacuse they help people who need it. Donating throug a foundation is better because all the money doesn't come out of your pocket and you get to pay less taxes.

No.

Who says?
The Gates foundation gives away a smurfload of money
This is certainly not new. His foundation has been giving away large amounts of money for years.
It's amazing how he could do something so selfless, and some ass like Egress manages to insult him for it.

Re: Gates donates $750 million
As I pointed out, it's hardly selfless. He has ulterior motives. If he had a true spirit of generosity, he wouldn't screw the permatemps or employ predatory business practices of the sort which have landed his company in hot water with the courts.
And thanks for the gratuitous cheap shot, Habs. Getting cranky without your hockey fix? Or is it that fact that your city failed to keep its baseball team? Anyways, I look forward to taking the subway to see the Nationals this year. You can, um, watch them on TV or something.

In my opinion, the good he does by giving money is cancled out by Windows and all the other crap he turns out to everyone who has to/does buy it. Meh..just my opinon.

Exactly.
The timing of some of his gifts may seem suspicious - but that statistically is going to happen when you give a lot of money to a lot of organizations.
I still remember when Bill Gates bought out all unsold Oakland Raider tickets so that kids in Oakland could go to a Raiders game. FYI - the city of Oakland was not suing at the time, nor was the NFL, or the State of California.

Compared to other Quebecers, I'm not that big of a hockey fan. In fact, aside from the Habs, I could give less of a crap about the NHL. The game has gotten boring, slow and repetitive. I'm definitely a bigger basketball fan.
As far as the Expos leaving, it hasn't come as a surprise. Expos fans have been waiting for that day for 6 years. They've been preparing to move it for 6 years, one of the reason why few people showed up. I've heard all the insults possible as an Expos fan, so don't even bother.
Regardless of any other motives Bill may have
There aren't any alternative motives. He's been donating extremely large amounts of money for a large amount of time now. It isn't even like this is his first time.
In my opinion, the good he does by giving money is cancled out by Windows and all the other crap he turns out to everyone who has to/does buy it.
As I pointed out, it's hardly selfless. He has ulterior motives. If he had a true spirit of generosity, he wouldn't screw the permatemps or employ predatory business practices of the sort which have landed his company in hot water with the courts.
What does he have to cancel out? Has he ever harmed you? What does he have to gain, complete market share?
So what if he has a completely dominant business. If Apple had his power, none of you would be complaining. Apple is trying to gain complete control of the Audio Player market and no one here is complaining (large capacity, mid capacity, flash).
Gates doesn't have to make up for anything he's done wrong because he hasn't done anything wrong. He runs a powerful business that revolutionized the computer industry.
Some people like Engress act as if he's done something offensive to them on a personal level and it's absurd.
