Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

I'm waiting for my new 12" PB to arrive. My present machine is a 266 iMac running 10.1.5. After spending  $2,000 on my new PB, should I be expected to spend another $129.00 (I know you can get it for much less now) to upgrade my iMac. Is it o.k. to use the install CD from my new PB instead.

This may be a rhetoricle questions as I'm pretty sure that Apple expects you to buy the seperate Jag CD to upgrade addtional machines, even if you are a home user. If this is the case though, I'll just use the install CD from my PB when it arrives and update my iMac anyway. I guess my question is: What would you do?

Keep in mind, it's not like I'll be using the upgrade CD on dozens of machines. Just my one iMac.

Sounds like you know the answer.  What would I do?  Well, as I did just get a TiBook, and I have not used its discs to install Jag on my Tower, I suppose it's pretty safe to say that I wouldn't do it.

I doubt you would even be able to update the iMac with a PowerBook CD in the first place.

I'd go for it. It's illegal, immoral and hurts Apple, but I, for one, think it's ridiculous to buy two separate copies of software for use on two computers in the same house. If you wanted to do it legally, you could only keep one computer operating at a time, but it's not like Apple's going to break down your door if you do otherwise.

Could you clarify why? Thanks.

Apple usually supplies a system-specific CD with the system software on it. Sometimes, the software will ONLY install on the specified computer model, rejecting install on all other systems, although this is not always the case. It's worth a try either way.

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

Here's what I figure...if you purchased a piece of software, you should be entitled to install it on as many computers that you OWN.  If you have 14 Macs lying around at home, install Jaguar on all of them.  That should be acceptable, since its YOUR software and YOUR machines.  However, if you're talking about four computers in a computer lab with mulitple users, then its different.  But if its yours, then you SHOULD be allowed to install it on as many of YOUR machines as you wish.

I doubt it. The OS X install itself is machine agnostic.

That's bull. It's a normal OS X disc with a special silkscreen on it. Except for the latest powerbooks, which have that neat DVD-ROM restore disk. I don't know how that would work (would other Macs support booting from a DVD?).

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

Anyone else know if this is impossible/possible for sure? Has anyone done this?

I remember that when I got my iMac four years ago, it came with what appeared to be regular install CD's (I have not seen them in a very long time as I've been running OS X since it came out of beta).

I installed the copy of jag that came with my iBook on my Power Mac with no problem whatsoever.

in a matter of 6 months i bought a Power Mac, iPod and iBook so i don't feel terribly guilty, although i do think buying 2 copies of jaguar would have been the right thing to do.

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

Ive always felt that when your buying software, your buying it for your personal use. if you personally use more than one machine, then you install the software on whatever machines you use.

imagine if everytime you bought something, you were told it could only be used on one thing, period.

but on the other hand

software isnt like most other things. most stuff you can only use it on one thing at a time, software is a "renewable resource" if you will, meaning you can get equal use out of it spread across different machines at the same time.

its a tough question. i still believe when you buy software to use, you should be able to put it wherever you will be using it, but that doesnt mean running amuck with it wherever itll work...

That's good to know and seems logical to me. Thanks for the info.

A Jaguar CD is a Jaguar CD. There is no difference between PowerBook, iMac, tower, etc. The restore CDs would be a different story but not the OS.

They supply system specific restore CDs but not OS X install CDs.

Now, if you were talking about trying to install OS 9, that's a different story. I'm not sure how long this has been going on but they are actually part of the system restore CDs and can not be installed separately.

Bzzzzttttt. Wrong answer. Where did you come up with this? You must have pulled it out of thin air because I have been using Mac's for a long time and have yet to see an OS install disc update firmware. There is always a note to check your firmware to make sure that it is up to date before installing but the OS disc itself does NOT install new firmware.

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

I'm not sure about this, but isn't Apple supplying the entire software and restore disk on a single DVD-ROM now?  So the question would be moot unless you have a DVD-ROM drive.  You would not be able to read the disk in a CD-RW iMac.

This may be but OS X is not on the software and restore disk. It comes separately. There are times when you need to reinstall the system software and you don't want to restore the entire computer and Apple knows this which is why the OS is shipped separately.

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?

I'm waiting for my new 12" PB to arrive. My present machine is a 266 iMac running 10.1.5. After spending  $2,000 on my new PB, should I be expected to spend another $129.00 (I know you can get it for much less now) to upgrade my iMac. Is it o.k. to use the install CD from my new PB instead.

Wouldn't the newest version of the OS X software run really slow on the 266 iMac?

Thanks,

Chad (Mac' newbie)

Thanks, I stand corrected.

Why would it run any slower than the 10.1.5 I'm running now. Seems to me that it would be faster if anything since the OS keeps getting better in this regards (yes, even though a 266 iMac obviosly can't take advantage of Quartz Extreme). Am I wrong?
