Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?
Wouldn't the newest version of Mac OS X run really slowly on the 266 iMac?
Why would it run any slower than the 10.1.5 I'm running now? If anything, it seems to me that it would be faster. Mac OS X keeps getting faster with each release. (even though a 266 iMac obviously can't take advantage of Quartz Extreme). Am I wrong?
No, you are right. Jaguar will still be slow on your iMac, but it will be faster than 10.1.5.
If it is still to slow after you install Jaguar, max out the RAM to 128MB (if you haven't already) and install ShadowKiller

Actually there are only certain instances where my iMac is annoyingly slow.
Never heard of "ShadowKiller" though. Just downloaded it and will give it a shot. Thanks.

128MB? I have 190MB now and it should take up to 512MB.

Actually the maximum RAM is 512MB. The original listing was 128MB but that was before larger RAM sizes were available.

Re: Bought new Mac, use OS X install CD to update old Mac?
I have installed Jaguar on an iMac with 233 (original bondi) with 512 MB RAM, and it works fine. A little slower than I would like but, it is very usable.
