FCP/dual processor rant...

On a very positive note, I want to say how great it is to be using X for editing.

If you're still editing with FCP in OS 9 on a dual machine, (unless you've got tons of hardware without X support) honestly, you're missing out.

I have a single processor G4 at home, and it sucks at editing while multitasking.  At work, I have a DP 800.  It is flawless.  The FCP 3.0.4 update has kept me very stable in X as well.  I'm flipping around in 5 different apps, and this thing is rock solid.

Just wanted to say that.  Back to work...

Re: FCP/dual processor rant...

Does that mean that my new 17" PowerBook with 1 gig G4, 1 gig of DDR RAM, and external 7200 RPM 200 gig HD will suck for video editing in FCP? It is still being assembled so I haven't tested it out yet. Maybe not hardcore multitasking but I would be able to use Final Cut Pro alone without any problems right?

So long,
Larg0

Re: FCP/dual processor rant...

Your machine is going to be awesome.  Don't worry about the functionality of FCP.  Since the last update to it, its been really solid.  Just remember to save a lot anyway.  Before the update, I had to save every time before I went to render, because the program was almost expected to bomb out.
Otherwise, the DP is just more capable of doing other things while FCP is rendering than on my 867.  Don't get me wrong, I still do multitasking at home, but I'm not as liberal with open programs than I am at work with the DP.

Re: FCP/dual processor rant...

You have nothing to fear, Larg0. I have FCP 3 on my single processor G4 733, in Mac OS X 10.2.3. Runs very well. Multi-tasking is a bit difficult while rendering (sometimes I try chatting, which is a bit slow, but then again I'm using Proteus with translucent windows...), but it is still AWESOME.
