Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

Good work.

I'm back on the QS moddin bandwagon again. I want to make it a lot quieter, cooler and quieter. Now that my 9800 Pro and an extra HD is in there kicking up a storm and making the whole shebang hot n' loud, I've decided to perform some more complicated and obsessive mods to cool the QS.

Stay tuned for more crazy mods.

You might kill two with one stone this way...

Not just a great 9800 cooler, but one with external exhaust to cool the case at the price of a PCI slot. Plenty of room for copper ramsinks, too. Clicking filter (cap?) to keep electrical noise down as well, and quiet.

In stock here at $27USD:

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

Well, mod 1!

Sealed in the fins of the head-sink and added a second shroud to the Fan which blows out. This has cooled it a lot, but hasn't made it much quieter.

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

Which fan did you eventually use to replace the Sunon MagLev CPU fan? For those who don't know, the CPU fan used in the Apple Quicksilver 2001 and 2002 models is indeed a Sunon Magnetic Levitation fan, model number KDE1206PTV1. The part number on the Directron site is wrong, as the number they list is for one of the ball-bearing fans. The fan costs $5.22 from Allied Electronics or $8.99 from Directron. It's 23.5 CFM. Sunon has a slower and quieter 19.3 CFM fan which may work and still provide adequate cooling. Model number is KDE1206PTV2. Frankly, for CPU cooling, you should stay as close to 20 CFM as possible. The Panaflow that got recommended in other modding articles is too darn slow and doesn't push enough air to keep things cool. You can play around when it comes to the case fans, but I wouldn't get cute when it comes to the CPU fan.

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

The Sunon is back in sad despite the noise.

Mod 2.
Going down to the hardware store, I found some antistatic matting that you use on table legs to protect the floor. This wonderful material now creates a second shroud around the CPU fan so that all the air is coming across the heatsink. The heatsink also has some stuck on-top so that air has to flow through it and not around. This basically dropped the CPU temp immediately.

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

Mod 3, kinda...

Leaving the side door open enough so that the CPU fan can blow straight through the case means that not only does the CPU temp stay way down, but the original Sunon fan never hits deafening.

I'm not sure why, but the case seems to trap heat at the top and can't remove it. I'm almost considering adding/making a perforated top to the case to allow the heat to rise out. Should be interesting at any rate.

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

In-fact an exhaust fan in the top of the case might improve airflow greatly. Not only would it draw out hot air from the CPU, but it would also ensure good movement of air past the PCI cards and the HDs.

Re: Quieting the QS. Non invasive mods.

Closer inspection of the case reveals that the top plastic panel should be easily removed. I'm considering taking it off and leaving it for a few days to monitor it. If it's as simple as a few drill holes in the top of the case, carefully positioned, to quieten these buggers then so be it!

wink

Oh, if anyone can point out where on the motherboard/daughtercard the temperature sensor is, it would be a great help. (My guess is somewhere towards the top under the bit of the heat-sink that just out.) This will hopefully let me make a better judgement on where these holes should be drilled.

EDIT: My mods are looking more invasive now...
I may take the top off and replace it with cardboard then start adding holes till it has the desired effect, might be a better idea than taking a power drill to it...
