My 1GHz 12" powerbook is over 1yr old..forgot to get applecare!
Yep I thought I still had time, but realized it was a couple months over 1yr old! After past issues with other powerbooks/ibook I said I would never own an out of warranty Laptop!!!!!! Do you think they would still let me get applecare? They never reminded me!!!!!!!!!! I think because I also have/had a lemon of a clamshell iBook that had applecare and they spent alot of money on it and then endedd up screwing me in the end. What should I do, If I can't get appleacare I am going to sell it!

Don't worry about it. I bought a powerbook 867mhz without applecare, and it's doing fine. It's damn near 2 years old, and I haven't had a problem with it.

That's it, your life's over.
Seriously though, you might have saved hundreds of dollars (or whatever it costs there) - or maybe the thing breaks and you'll still spend less having it repaired... I'd be more worried if your PowerBook was first gen, but it's more like 17th.

I'm with ya... except I ignored the reminder. After all, my older iBook 600MHz lasted 2 years and I was able to sell it without it ever having any problems.
Nope... not this time. My battery may have just died and since I don't have Applecare, I gotta buy a new one. Still, it's better than any other part dying so I should count my "blessings."

My ibook lasted 3 years, never had a problem. Just when apple care was up my son decided it wanted to take a ride down the steps.

Applecare for Powerbooks is FREAKING CRAZY EXPENSIVE!!! Especially for the 12", it's way expenseive, I think the applecare for the 12" pbook should cost the same as that for the iBook. It's insane, I mean 350 bucks for a liike 1500 computer? no, that's too much.

Well, I do "baby" my powerbook so dropping it - while possible - is not an issue. I have been told that hardware typically fails within the first 90 days. That doesn't mean it can't fail later, mind you.
If the battery becomes the (my
) only problem, $129 for a new one is still better than $350.

Re: My 1GHz 12" powerbook is over 1yr old..forgot to get applecare!
Thanks for all the help!
Here is why I am skitttish. First off I do not have alot of money. But I use my laptops constantly and in all kinds of conditions for work and play.
My first latop was a 520 and it was one of my favorites, but had several problems like faulty hinges and other things that my father ended up "epoxy-ing" back together. My secong laptop was a Duo 280C that was a great little laptop that never really had a problem other that the keyboard getting old. The third one was a 1400cs that was purchased new for $2400, but after the first year of warranty totally gave up, and is the reason I swore I would never be without warranty again. The Third was an iBook 366 that I still have, and had so many screen replacements and motherboard replacements you thinik they would have given me a new one!, and then after my 3yrs of applecare where up it still had the same uncurable problems they refused to fix it any more. Now I have my PowerBook that has only needed some minor work, is now out of warranty and making me uncofortable. But as you guys said, Don't worry or sell it. So I will have to think about it.
Thanks All

Applecare doesn't include batteries anyway so with the money you saved you can buy 3 batteries.

If you are a student then Applecare is $239.

Well ibooks and powerbooks sell very nicely on ebay. Not sure what exactly was damaged when it took its trip down the steps, but i ultimately put it on ebay as a non booting and i didn't know why
Still got $982 for it

You'll be fine. I always keep an insurance policy through Safeware (http://www.safeware.com/) in case I drop my beloved 15" Al-Book.
I've never bought AppleCare (owned 1 iBook, 3 PowerBooks, 2 eMacs, and a PowerMac) and have never regretted it. At this point, I've paid for a new computer with the money I've saved on no AppleCare; so if one breaks, I'm still money ahead.

Does safeware totally replace applecare?
Is there anything safeware doesn't cover that applecare does?
